Nerdpie’s Guide To Minecraft: The First Night

nerdpies-guide-to-minecraft-the-first-night

This post is for all you noobs out there that are just booting up Minecraft and realize you don’t know what you am doing. For all of you seasoned Minecrafters stick around you might learn something. I realize most people aren’t familiar with the way that you move around in Minecraft. The W key is move forward. The E key is your inventory and the mouse moves the camera. You will right click on things to break them and left click on things to use them.

The first thing you are going to want to do is find shelter. Suggest for super noobs you should hid a cave. There are  lot of different cves you could hide in. In some worlds there are caves that are perfect for people to hid in. You need to make sure you have a light source in where ever you take shelter. Because monsters will spawn wherever there is no light. And normally you don’t want to fight monsters on your first night.

The next thing you need to do is find wood. You need to dig a bunch of trees out with your fist so you have logs. Once you have logs you can start to crafting items. The first thing you should make is a crafting table. Open up your inventory then put a log in to the table with 4 squares. That is called the crafting interface and you will use it to make different items. The box that is to the side should have planks in them take them out and fill every hole in the crafting interface with planks and you will get a crafting table. Now you can craft all kinds of things. To learn more about what you can craft click here

I hope that this helps you learn how to start playing Minecraft.

How to Enchant Your Minecraft Tools

how-to-enchant-your-minecraft-tools

This week’s post is all about the lesser known enchantments  that you can put it on tools. I don’t use these very often but when I do they are super helpful. You need to make sure it is worth it tho because once I enchanted a bunch of cobblestone tools. Then they broke in about one night. I suggest you only enchant tools that are iron and above. But it does depend on what you are going to be using the tools on.

Silk touch

This enchantment is the best because it is the only way to get glass that has been placed or bookshelf’s. It can be put on a pickaxe, shovel, or axe. And can dig out a lot of different things like monster eggs and will dig out a bunch of different things as blocks like redstone ore instead of a couple of redstone pieces.

Unbreaking

I think that this is awesome because it can extend the life of your tools. I usually use this on diamond tools because this will extend the life of them and diamonds are super hard to find. You can get this at different levels because you can extend the life of the tool by different amounts. This enchantment you can use on armor, weapons and tools.

Fortune

This is good because you can get more items. This means that the things that you would only get some of the time like gravel and things from zombies. It can be fortune one or fortune two and both of them are helpful. It can be put on the pickaxes, shovel and axe.

Mending

This is awesome because you can make your tools mendable. If your item with mending is on you or in your hand and you get xp it will go into the item if it is damaged and mend it. It can be used on all tools, armor, and weapons.

I hope that these enchantments are going to help you with your Minecraft projects. Let me know what you want to learn next.

Minecraft’s Strange Metal

minecraft's strange metals

Today’s post is all about strange minerals that I bet you didn’t know about. There is a lot of different minerals that are set in the ground that are every where. I try to find the most different minerals I could for this post. Some of them aren’t even in the over world.

Nether Quartz

This is mostly used for redstone devices and for decoration. You can find Nether quartz in the Nether (surprise surprise) but you don’t have to do a ton of digging to find it. Normally it is right on the surface but it can be kind of deep. The main way to use Nether quartz is for a daylight sensor(a row of glass on the top, Nether quartz across the middle and any wood slab across the bottom of the crafting interface.)

Emeralds

These are used for trading in villages and are very valuable indeed because you can trade them for a lot of different things. You can also trade different items for emeralds. You can’t craft with them which is a pain but you can get items from them that you can craft. You will get them kind of deep into the soil around diamonds and iron.

Lapis Lazuli

This is a very helpful gem because you can use it to enchant armor and tools and to make dyes. This is isn’t very rare because it comes in big batches when you find it. You can find catches of Lapis Lazuli any where under about 30 blocks from the surface and they keep going down. You can use Lapis Lazuli as a dye on its own or add bone meal to it or green to make it different types. You should save up your Lapis Lazuli because you will always need to enchant stuff when you don’t expect it.

I hope that this post helps you find all of the metals you would want. Please let me know what you would like me to talk about in next week’s post.

Your Minecraft Insight into Pyrotechnics

your minecraft insight into Protechnics

Today I am going to teach you how to blow stuff up in Minecraft. One thing that is in common with all manner of blowing stuff up is that you need gunpowder. The best way to get gunpowder is to kill creepers but you can also get them from chests that are spawned in villages or abandoned mineshafts. I like to use a bow and arrow to kill creepers because if you are near creepers for too long they will explode and that can kill you.

There are 2 different kinds of stuff I am going to talk about the first one is Fire works. These are really cool and they are very customizable which is helpful. Because then you can make an unique firework for yourself. First you need to make a firework star by putting any dye on the crafting table with a piece of gunpowder. Next you make a firework by putting your firework star, a piece of paper, and a piece of gunpowder on the crafting table. Just set one of these babies on the ground and then you will see a beautiful firework display in the sky.

The second kind is TNT. This is a fave weapon of Nerdster in traps but I don’t use it that much. TNT is basically the best way to blow up anyone and you can hook it up to a button to set it off so you can get away first. The way to make TNT is gunpowder in the top left and right, middle middle, and the bottom left and right of the crafting table and sand everywhere else.

I hope that this helps add fun to your Minecraft parties and a cool way to get rid of any gate crashers. Let me know what else you guys would like to learn about.

Farming The Minecraft Way

farming the minecraft way

Today I am going to talk about farming in Minecraft. One of my friends who just started getting into Minecraft said that she had a hard time with some different farming techniques so today I am going to help you guys out with that kind of stuff. When you farm on Minecraft there is a lot of variations that you can do to make a totally different farm.

The main way I make my farm is with a lot of animals because they can be really important. Here is a list of a couple of farm animals that you should keep an eye out for.

  • Cows are pretty much the best farming animal because they are used for so many things. First they will give you milk whenever you want. You just need  to left click on it with a bucket and then the bucket will be filled with milk. And you can get leather and beef when you kill the cow. Also to get baby cows you need to give 2 grown up cows wheat and then they will make a baby cow.
  • Chickens are another good farmhouse staple. These are one of the most common animals. I have found them in almost all biomes that I have settled down in. When you first get them it can take you awhile to get a good flock going but once once you do you will never want to go without chickens again. I suggest that you actually have 2 chicken pits. One that is filled with chickens that never get slaughtered. The reason you want to have this pit is to get eggs. The other one you can chuck all of your unwanted eggs into and when they grow up you can kill them to get chicken meat and feathers. Another way to get chickens is to breed them together with seeds.

I hope that this helps you guys out.

Your Minecraft Insight into Potions

your minecraft insight into potions

Today I am going to talk about potions. Potions can be helpful if you know what you are doing. I only recently learned how to make potions and started to use them in Minecraft. If you want to start using potions you are going to need to be pretty far in the game. I suggest you try making potions after you have had a couple of successful trips in the Nether

The main thing that you need to have before starting to make any potions is a brewing stand. These can only be made once you have been in the Nether for some time as they require a blaze rod which you can only get from killing a blaze. You can only find blazes in Nether fortresses which can be a pain to find and are really hard to get through if you are not a super good fighter. I had to go through it like ten times before I could come home in one piece. The way to make a brewing stand is one blaze rod in the middle middle and and cobblestone across the bottom of the crafting interface. In the 1.10 update they made it so that the brewing stand has to have blaze powder in it to run.

Most of the ingredients that are used in brewing are really hard to get but there are a couple that are pretty common. The first thing that you have to do is get a bottle of water and put it in the brewing stand next you need to get nether wart. You can find it in the nether fortress and it is pretty easy to harvest. You will need to grow more of it so bring back some soul sand and you can start up a nether wart farm. Once you have brewed your nether wart into your water try out different ingredients to try to find all the potions you can.

How To Nerd Out Your Minecraft Fortress

how to nerd out your minecraf fortress

This is a post all about how to decorate your sweet Minecraft fortress. I suggest you get pretty far into the game before you start thinking about decorating. Because a lot of decorating tips can use a lot of resources. Make sure you have a big enough place to finish your decorations before you start.

The Library

I think that every place should have a good library or else you will have nothing to do. And a library is useful because if you want to enchant anything you will need a library(to learn more about enchanting click here). But I think you should have a bigger library than just what is necessary to enchant items because that isn’t enough room for books. And you can make some really cool libraries if you have enough space.

A Few Flowers

What do you see in every magazine about home decor. Flowers. I like using flowers in my designs because they are easy. I once just covered a roof  in flowers and the impact was huge. The best way to display flowers in your home is a flower pot. A flower pot is a piece of clay in the bottom middle and in the middle left and right in the crafting table. Then you can just stick in a flower to match the design and you are good to go.

A Picture

This is one of the best items to use if you don’t want to spend a ton of time on your decor it will go on any wall and looks really pretty with any color. To make a picture put a piece of wool in the center and sticks in every other spot on the crafting table. When you place it there will be a random picture on it. if you don’t like the picture that you can take it off and put it back on and you will get a different one.

I hope this helps you when you want to redo your Minecraft home.

Minecraft’s Strange ones

Minecraft's strange ones

This post is all about lesser known monsters. These are monsters that you might not have seen before because they are pretty rare, The one that I have seen the most is the spider jockey but there are quite a few of them. And I will share my knowledge with you.

The Spider Jockey is only found in the Overworld and it is not found often. At the most you only find one a night over all of a world. A Spider Jockey is a Skeleton sitting on a Spider.  A Spider Jockey is a very formidable enemies to face because the Skeleton will shoot at you and the Spider will climb up walls at you. To make them even worse they have the health of a Spider and a Skeleton combined. And a Spider Jockey won’t burn up in the sun because of the Spiders immunity to the sun.

The Chicken Jockey I have only seen once but it looks pretty funny when you see it. You can have a baby zombie or a pig man on your chicken zombie. The chicken will run through 1 block high areas but if the block above them isn’t translucent the zombie will suffocate. The chicken will make it so that they won’t get fall damage. The chicken will not lay eggs. The chicken will follow seeds but can’t eat them. The Chicken Jockey can equip items and pick them up.

There is a Skeleton horse and a Zombie horse that are almost the same as a horse but with a couple key differences. When you touch them you will get hurt and you can’t tame them.

I hope that this post has helped you learn what to do when you encounter one of Minecraft’s strange ones. Let me know what you want to learn next in the comments.

How To Be Like an Avenger in Minecraft: Spiderman

spiderman

Today I am going to talk about Spiderman. He is one of my favorite superheroes and he is really cool too. There are a lot of spider stuff in Minecraft and today I am going to teach you all about them. Spiderman is one avenger that is kind of easy to be like in Minecraft. I mean you can’t shoot webs out of your gloves and I don’t know how to get a spider sense on Minecraft but we can trap monsters in webs and look at how the spider works to teach you how to survive like a spider.

Webs

I like using webs in traps but they are a little hard to get. You will only see spider webs spawned naturally in abandoned mine shafts. To get a web you need to right click on it with shears. Or you can right click on it with a sword and you will get one string. One time I have gotten two 64 of string from one time going into a abandoned mine shaft.

Spiders

This are tricky little monsters that can be very dangerous if you don’t know what you are doing. Spiders can come out in the morning but they are less deadly in the morning. Spiders are passive in the day unless you look right at them within 30 blocks.

Spiders can climb up walls and will jump on you if they can. I suggest when you are fighting anything but especially spiders, take the upper ground. That way a spider can’t jump down on you. Be careful that spiders can’t get onto your roof when you don’t want them to. Because spiders can climb up walls like Spiderman. If you have an overhang or a spot that is made of fence all the way round a spider can never get onto your roof.

Cave Spiders

These behave like spiders but have a couple of unique characteristics.

  • They are poisonous when you touch them
  • They are smaller than regular spiders
  • They spawn in mineshafts
  • They are blue

I hope that this helps you on your quest to become an Avenger. Let me know on tips and tricks you guys have with Minecraft.

10 Math Card Games

10 Math Card Games NerdFamily

It isn’t shocking that math skills are built by repetition. It is also well known facts that we remember having fun and if we are learning at the same time, we remember that too! In that spirit here are some fun math games to play with your kids! All you need is a standard deck of cards. You will have learning and quality time! Can’t beat that!

1) Multiplication Math War: Flip cards and who ever yells out the multiplication fact first wins the cards!

2) Guess my number: Basically 20 questions. Are you a factor of 10? Are you higher than 3?

3) Make the highest number: Deal out 4 cards. Who ever can make the highest total (using addition or multiplication) wins.

4) Go Fish Add Up/Subtract Down: This is great for preschool kids. If you have a four you could ask for a 5 or a 3. Teaches number order.

5) Largest pile: Come up with a total goal (say 20) then deal out cards evenly among the players and who ever can get to 20 with the largest amount of cards wins. You can chose addition and/or subtraction.

6) Addition Math War: Flip cards and who ever yells out the addition fact first wins the cards.

7) Factor Family: Deal out 5 cards and the first person who can make a factoring relationship with all 5 wins. Say you get a 2, 3, 5, 10 and 6. You could go obvious and say 1800 (all multiplied together) or go a bit smoother with 60. 10 time 6 is 60 and 5, 3, and 2 are factors. The lowest number wins because that is the best factoring relationship.

8) Skip Series Rummy: Like regular rummy but instead of runs (1,2,3) or groups of 3 you are looking for skip runs (2, 4, 6, or 1, 3, 5).

9) Sum 10 memory: Instead of looking for boring pairs you are looking for pairs that add up to 10.

10) Make up a math sentence: You are dealt a card. You must make up a math sentence that results in that number. Round 2 is to deal out 2 cards. 1 card is the answer to the math question and 1 is in it.
