5 Juvenile Science Fiction Series

Juvenile_Science_Fiction

Science fiction, it is the reading material of geeks! With our kids playing with Legos, doing Robotics, and spending gobs of time on computers every day, they are turning into geeks younger and younger. So it sounds like science fiction is the reading material of choice.

Finding science fiction that is subject appropriate and reading level appropriate can be a challenge. Especially if you weren’t a big science fiction reader as a child yourself. Personally I had just heard of or read science fiction that was Young Adult or (mostly) even more mature than that. But there is a wealth of great science fiction for juvenile readers!

Here are 5 series to get your young readers going. Some of these are newer offerings and some are relatively old books! My kids have read all of these so they are personal recommendations. But remember, we are recommending these series for your kids but not everything by these authors! Some of them (like Heinlein) have a variety of offerings for a variety of maturity!

1) Lucky Starr series: These are actually by Isaac Asimov but he wrote them under the name Paul French. He wrote these in the hopes for them to be a television series back in the 1950’s. There are 6 books in this series!

2) Heinlein’s Juveniles Book Series: Robert Heinlein wrote a series of 12 juvenile books. But series is a bit odd because they don’t share characters or follow a timeline. The last book, Have Space Suit-Will Travel, is one of NerdPie’s favorite scifi books and she always recommends it!

3) Rod Allbright and the Galactic Patrol: This is a 4 book collection ( Aliens Ate My Homework, I Left My Sneakers in Dimension X, The Search for Snout, Aliens Stole My Body) by Bruce Coville. This follows the adventures of a 6th grader named Rod Allbright. It is a super cute and fun series.

4) NERDS: This is a super fun series of 5 books by Michael Buckley. It is the geeky adventures of a group of nerdy friends. My kids love, love, love this series. To the point that they almost did a coordinated Halloween costume themed by the characters.

5) Tom Swift: This is like a science fiction series that has over 100 books! These books first made their appearance in 1910 and have continued until 2007. Tom Swift is an inventor and adventurer who inspired people like Steve Wozniak and Isaac Asimov so he has that going for him;). What I want to know is how come I never heard of these when I was a kid?

So there you have 5 kid friendly Science Fiction series for your kids (and possibly you) to read!

Into the Woods Hits the Big Screen

IntotheWoodsCouple

The movie production of Into the Woods is finally coming out!!! Those of us who are theater nerds have been waiting for this day for a long time! I recently got to attend a screening and it was worth the wait!

It has surprised me how many people were not already familiar with the long standing Into the Woods that was written by the legendary Stephen Sondheim. So for those of you who don’t know… This takes a few fairy tales and wonders if everyone always gets a happy ending. I believe the tag line is “Be careful what you wish for”. This isn’t a 1950’s song and dance musical but a deeper story with a slower score that speaks more to issues and deeper themes. And you need to know that before you take the 8 year old and she gets lost and finds the music a little boring.

All that said. Loved it! I can’t wait for my kids to watch it too.

The acting was great! The effects were breath taking. And is there anything Meryl Streep can’t do? Then there was the music. I was introduced to this music by listening to Bernadette Peters and Mandy Patinkin. “No One is Alone” holds such a special place in my heart it makes me cry. So I was prepared to be a little disappointed in the music but a girl can’t have everything, right? Wrong! The music was top notch! The cast was amazing!

I loved this movie!

I actually spoke to a variety of people after the screening to see what they thought and the mix really surprised me. When I spoke to adults who familiar with the stage version the praise was overwhelming! It turned out better than any dared hoped for. But then I spoke with some homeschool families that I knew who were there. They weren’t so positive. The only thing they knew before viewing it was that it was a Disney musical about fairy tales. They were disappointed. They enjoyed the first half (the more traditional part of the story) but then hated the second half. The parents said if they hadn’t expected a kids’ movie that they might have enjoyed it more. The kids, they didn’t care for it. They didn’t track the story well and found the music boring. But I really think that all had to do with expectations. If you are expecting Frozen or even Mary Poppins you will be disappointed.

My final analysis: I loved it. I felt the PG rating was very good because you need to look into it and figure out if this is something your own kids will like. I personally love the fact that it is an adult depth movie with very family friendly staging. I loved it and I recommend it!

A Quick Look at the Motorola Droid Turbo

B00E9WAUKU-moto-droidultra-red-veriz-main-sm

I recently got my hands on the new Droid Turbo from Verizon to check out. I really like it! It has a huge screen, Active View and a 20 mp camera. And I got it in red;). What isn’t to like?

Seriously, it has a quad core processor and is really fast. The Active Display means you can get a preview of your notifications by flipping your phone or hovering over it. That saves battery life because you don’t have to fully turn on your screen and it means you can sneak a peak and not interrupt what ever you are doing.

I love a nice big screen and the Turbo has a 5.2 inch screen. But it isn’t just a size issue because it also has a very nice quality HD display. The screen is the 3rd generation Gorilla Glass so it is basically indestructible which pairs well with the case that has Kevlar in it.

I was really to see how much Motorola has stepped up the camera! The rear facing camera is actually 21 mp! It is also fast and focuses really quickly so you can snap pictures as you live you life too. The camera also take 4D video. I don’t need 4D but I love that it takes such great video since I use my phone to vlog on and I need all the help I can get.

So far I am loving this phone! I am using all the Moto Assist features and will write more about those soon! I really recommend this phone! Thanks #VZWBuzz for sending it to me!!!

Are you ready for Christmas? Me neither! I still have just a touch of grocery and gift shopping left to do. The big thing I have left to do is wrapping gifts! But winning something awesome would help;).

Gifts that Grow Intelligence When You #GiftSmart

Gifts, gifts, gifts. While it isn’t what Christmas is truly about, it is a large component of celebrating the season. But I don’t want to just give gifts that just fill the docket of being gifts, instead I want to give gifts that equip, enlighten, or are useful in a fun way (no appliances or towels here;). So I was really stoked when I was approached to write about the #GiftSmart campaign at RadioShack!

I have to declare right out that RadioShack holds a special place in my heart. It has always been the source of components and geek toys long before I had ever heard of any other stores selling geek things! I also credit RadioShack for my wonderful marriage but that is another story for another day;). And I am happy to say that RadioShack is still known for great STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) gifts, along with fabulous geek gifts. And I received 2 of them this year!!!

LittleBits Synth Kit

The STEM gift I received from RadioShack was the LittleBits Synth kit. Have kids who like building things? Circuitry? Electronics? Regardless of the answer they will love this! This kit comes with everything you will need (including detailed instructions) to build 10 projects, with some components being shared;). A naturally geeky kid with jump right in and start assembling. Kids who haven’t really been exposed to STEM or just not actively interested in wiring everything in the world will love this kit. Why? They are going to make musical instruments! You get an instant payoff with every project and the more projects they build, the more they learn! And the pieces just snap together so you don’t have to actually do real technical wiring.

LittleBits is also a great tradition to start. You can buy more kits and combine them to do more and more things! And if you are looking for 1 gift to give a family with children, it is a winner.

Auvio_Bluetooth_Speaker

I also got to check out the AUVIO Bluetooth Portable Speaker. Of course it is geeky, fun, and very useful so it ticks all the marks for me! This is a great bluetooth speaker and so flexible. It is large enough to produce a great sound yet so light and portable. You can use it so many ways too.  I like to watch tv on a computer and while the display is phenomenal, sometimes my sound needs a little help! Having this speaker sitting and charging on my bookshelf means I can just pop it on! At the same time it is usable in the car, on the beach, or in your bathroom while you are having a nice relaxing bubble bath! This is that gift that you might not buy for yourself but you would use a ton if it is given to you! That is the perfect intersection!

RadioShack has a ton of other STEM and geek presents that are just waiting for you to pick up at your nearest location or online! Thanks so much to RadioShack for compensating me for this post and having some great products for gifts this year!

I leave you with Weird Al;).

Homemade Olive Garden Zuppa Toscana Soup

Homemade Zuppa Toscana Soup

When the weather turns the heart starts to crave soup! And when life is crazy there isn’t much easier to whip up and serve than a pot of soup. But in this house a soup that is served for dinner must eat like a meal!

This is a soup I crave, especially when I was pregnant;). But between being gluten free and the husband not being a giant fan of going out to dinner for pasta, I had to find a way to make this soup! I finally found a recipe and I was stoked! It is easy, quick and fairly cheap.

Ingredients:
1lb Italian Sausage (I use the Italian Sausage from the Meat Market, 2 links)
2 large Russet Baking Potatoes sliced in half, and then in 1/4 inch slices
1 large Onion, chopped
3 pieces of cooked bacon, chopped
2 cloves Garlic, minced
2 cups Kale or Swiss Chard, chopped
2 cans Chicken Broth
1 qt Water
1 c Heavy Whipping Cream

Process:
Cook your sausage. I remove the casing and then fry it. You could also bake for 1/2 hour at 300 degrees and then cut into slices.

Put your onions, potatoes, chicken broth, water, and garlic in the pot and cook on medium heat until potatoes are done. Add sausage, bacon, salt, and pepper to taste and simmer for another 10 minutes. Turn on low heat, add kale and cream. Heat through and serve!

I serve this fabulous soup with my Brazilian Cheese Rolls and a salad. The rolls are gluten free and cheesy and so tasty too!
