Can Someone Give Me Style?

I am a fashion dud! I have always been a fashion dud.

That is an extra sad statement because I love the fashion shows and do a pretty decent job picking out things for my very skinny, petite and adorable best friend.

Now I am not the kind of fashion loser who wears the crazy colors and stuff. I am the opposite. I love classic looks with a new twist on them. But I see the great new styles that are even in plus sizes and I am too wimpy to try them. When I try the cute new styles I never feel that they look right on me due to my size. I am afraid to really try much new because I am sure that if I get attention it is because I am committing a major fashion don’t! I don’t want to be the fat girl trying to hard to wear clothes that are just all wrong!

So here I am at 35 (almost 36) with little style! I have never really developed a style (other than what I have found on the clearance rack;) that I really feel comfortable with. I like some pieces but I am not convinced that they look good enough to pay full price for. So I just chicken out and buy clearance pieces (which isn’t always a bad thing). But I want something that looks cool, classic and pulled together!!!

So I hope that I get picked for the Secret Style Suite at BlogHer11!! Come on M.O.M. Squad and help a girl out! I am a homeschooling, blogging, stay at home mom of 4, can you give a girl some style;)?

  1. I had the same problem. I like classy and classic looks but found myself in p.j. or soft pants and thermal tops before my husband got home from work. It was just easier to throw them on and do our schooling and errands in comfort. I stopped using makeup and stopped getting my nails and toes done. I started coloring my hair at home myself, it was all in the name of frugal homeschooling. Then one day I looked at myself and said who is this? This used to be a fabulous woman with a cute hair style and cute clothes. Being in Alaska has not helped the wardrobe at all. In winter all you care about it warmth! But this year I made a change. I started shopping with outfits in mind. I did not just buy a shirt or pants here and there. I went outfit shopping. I saved money for a few months and got two pair of skinny jeans, I am a size 14 so no so skinny but they fit nicely and made me look slimmer than my size 18s that I have put elastic in the back of like children’s pants. I also went feminine because I was tired of looking like I was always camping in thermal tops. Khols has some great stuff also Old Navy. I cant wear the old navy pants but I love their sweaters. I got some minimal makeup, just powder (physicians formula that has a multi color pallet) mascara (2000 calorie) and a tinted lip gloss (bonnie bell cinnamon bun swirl) It is just enough to make me look fresh and not enough to make me look made up. I add eyeshadow for a date night. I keep lip gloss in my purse to. I don’t use it often but its there if I need to feel more done up. I think a smart pair of shoes does wonders and I also think that accessories dress up any outfit. I pick up costume jewelry at yard sales now. My oldest daughter loves it and shares it with me. If you find a nice pair of jeans or pants that you love get two pair of them. Then work your tops with accessories to make an outfit. I wear lots of neutrals so I have a few pair of ballerina flats in tan, nude, copper, silver and in navy blue suede, which match jeans on a casual day. A go to necklace that goes with everything and a matching bracelet. I also try to participate in What I Wore Wednesday when I start to slip. Check out my blog it has a WIWW post and the pleated poppy hosts the WIWW and has so many women posting, you will get great outfit ideas. I do my own toes with polish about once every two weeks but my fingernails just get a coat of light pink almost clear because it wears off to fast. I just put it on when were having a date night. We try to date night once a week. For us a date night is decaf coffee at the local coffee shop during my son’s scout meeting which is an hour and a half once a week. Sometimes my date is a early weekend morning fishing trip. I now have a cute athletic suit that I wear in teal green and I feel cute fishing! I need another few of those because they are so comfortable. Just having the pants and top match with a nice t’ under it and some clean white tennis feels made up. So my advice is light makeup, make is an outfit, accessorize. My daughter now pulls my hair through a cap and highlights it for me. I feel more like my old cute self more of the time. I also bought an apron to cook dinner in because I used to take off the cute clothes so they wouldn’t get splatter on them. This meant my husband usually got to see me in jammies when he got home from work and never knew how cute I looked that day.
