Amazon: To Boycott or Not to Boycott

For those who don’t live on Twitter, there was a book discovered on Amazon’s site called The Pedofile’s Guide to Love and Pleasure. It is an e-book and everyone is freaking out about it! Affiliates are bailing on them, people are boycotting and the twitter has tag #amazonfail is flying.

I have seen a couple of articles on this (Examiner.com Tacoma and MSNBC) and there is no information about what Amazon actually has said they are going to do. Now I want to point out a couple of things. First off, Amazon has in their own terms that they will pull content that they see as inappropriate. Secondly, this book was put up by a third party.

I have always liked Amazon and am an affiliate. So I wanted to know what Amazon was going to do about it. I heard that no one had been able to get hold of Amazon and I thought that was a bit ridiculous. So I reached out to Amazon. I just went through their site and had their customer service call me. I spoke with Ann who told me that the main offices had been notified and they had started the process to pull it down. She said they were all mortified and that it came in through a third party. They didn’t even know it was up until everything went crazy.

Now it is still there but I believe we can all give them the day before the mob decides to burn them down. I am just a little shocked that everyone freaked out so thoroughly without giving Amazon a chance to respond. But I guess that is the nature of a firestorm.

Now if Amazon doesn’t choose to actually remove this, I will reevaluate. But I am going to give them a chance to resolve this!

**UPDATE: I am hearing from different sources that they have heard from Amazon that they will be keeping the book up. I am still hoping that Amazon will do the right and legal thing by removing this book. I am just hoping that the 1st Amendment rights argument is  their go to argument until the facts are known.

Shutterfly

I love photo cards, especially for Christmas! So I was stoked to start poking around the Shutterfly to try and pick out our Christmas cards for this year!  I have vowed once again that this year I will actually be organized! This year I will have the cards ordered, address labels printed and be ready to go before December 1st! I hope I am not daydreaming;).

We have always gone with the flat photo card because we have adorable kids but then you wonder if you should send an additional letter. You know, to actually talk about those adorable kids. Decisions, decisions right? No, actually! I was really stoked to see their folded photo cards. You can have additional pictures put in it, sentiments, all your names, whatever. I think there is just enough space to put a simple letter that you don’t have to get to flowery in! You know what I mean, you don’t want to be bragging but upbeat none the less. I think this one might be perfect for the NerdFamily!

So what are you doing for your Christmas cards this year?

(I received some cards as compensation for this post! If you are a blogger and are interested in getting 50 cards from Shutterfly go find out how!)

(And yes, I also posted this on my food site;)

Love a Soldier

This last week I heard an interesting fact. Even though the President pulled the troops out of Iraq, there are still 50,000 members of the armed forces in Iraq. We also still have soldiers in Afghanistan and dozens of bases in foreign countries.

So I was excited to hear about our local Blue Star Moms organizing care packages and sending them off to many soldiers overseas! You have until November 11th if you want to participate. They are looking for ordinary things to give our troops just a taste of home. Things like

Tuna or Chicken Creations/Lunch Kits
(packages with condiments/ tuna or chicken salad with crackers)
Cup O Soup or Cup O Noodles
Beef Jerky – Trail mix – Nuts
Small bags of chips or small packs of Pringles
Individual powdered-drink mixes to put in water bottles
(Gatorade, Crystal lite, Kool-aid etc.)
Tea bags, sugar & creamer packs
David’s sun flower seeds
Cracker Jacks
Red/Black licorice
Cookies
Protein bars (ex: Power Bars)
Fruit snacks – roll-ups – gushers – (No canned items like fruit cups)
Candy (Tootsie Rolls, dots, gummy bears, jelly beans, jolly ranchers or anything that won’t melt -no chocolate, please!)
Gum (Caffeine Gum is a huge hit)
Breath mints
Water guns (for picnic fun)
Small Nerf balls or footballs – Velcro Dart games
Frisbees, Yo-Yo’s
Tennis balls, Hacky sacks
Card games (Uno, Skip Bo, etc.)
DVDs – Music CDs
Crossword puzzles, word search games, etc.
paper or plastic table-cloths, plastic forks
Black or white cotton socks
Pre-paid phone cards

So if you want to contribute some items or money, you can drop them off at locations around the Central Valley. That is including New Covenant Community Church on Nees between Cedar and Maple.

Remember that doing just a little can mean a whole lot! But hurry you only have until November 11th!!

Barbara’s Bakery Review

I recently received a box of goodies from Barbara’s Bakery to review. I got white cheddar cheese puffs, Snackimals, Puffins multigrain cereal and some high fiber cranberry cereal. They called it a NO Box because the food has no hydrogenated oils, no artificial flavors, no artificial preservatives, no refined sugar, no trans fats, no artificial additives and no high fructose corn syrup. So I was prepared for 1 of 2 things to happen. I thought either it would taste completely of cardboard but, I thought the best case I would like it ok but the rest of the family would hate it. Well, I was so wrong!!!

NerdDad actually said that the White Cheddar puffs were better than Cheetos!!! Now, if you know my husband, that is a huge statement.  I found out that there is actually something better than animal cookies. They are Snackimals which are chocolate chip animal cookies. Who can resist that? I think that I need to keep them in the cabinet just for me to snack on, the kids can eat something else;). And the cereals were just sweet enough with out being cardboard like at all!

There is another pleasant surprise! These yummy items from Barbara’s Bakery aren’t at pricey health food stores! They are available at Safeway, Vons, Albertsons and Trader Joe’s. And they even have coupons!!!

(This post was written for Family Review Network & Barbara’s Bakery who provided the complimentary product for review in exchange for my honest review)
