Note from NerdMom: This is a guest post by Shauna Fleuridor who was a lucky Sprouts Spree winner!!! I appreciate her guest post!!! I will write my thoughts on Sprouts soon!

Fresno has a brand new Sprouts Farmer’s Market, and the grand opening celebration included a Sprouts Spree – 2 contestants, 2 minutes to fill their carts, the one with the highest total at checkout wins a $500 gift card.

It’s not everyday when an everyday mom like me gets a chance to win something big … So, I put on my lucky tennis shoes, picked out a well-oiled shopping cart, and made sure my cheering squad (my two kidlets, mom, and cousin) were there to well, cheer me on.

My strategy – pick a good spot and get as much as I could in the cart. I avoided the local fresh fruits and veggies, bakery, seafood, cheeses, freshly ground beef, nuts, spices, oils (off limits were alcohol, vitamin/supplements, bulk foods) and, I definitely avoided the grand opening $1 sale of pineapples, watermelons, eggs, and coconut water … and went straight for the pet section. That’s right, I loaded my cart with $50 bags of dog food. And kitty corner to that was a shelf of $20 camelbak bottles. Ka-ching! I was the clear winner and, they say I broke the record of sprees at other store openings. Gotta love it!

You Pick Farms

We all know that Fresno is the home to great produce but it has always seemed like all that produce is on a truck to a grocery store. I am sick of hearing from friends around the state and the nation how much fun they have had at the You-pick farms in their area while it seemed to not be an option for me!!! So I did a little research and found out that we have a few great You-Pick opportunities in the Fresno area! Not all of them are in Fresno proper but that shouldn’t be all that surprising;).

Rancho Notso Grande: They are open Tue-Sat 7am-7pm Right now they have blueberries & blackberries available. They charge $6.50/pound for what ever you get out the gate. There is no charge for anything you devour while you are picking. That is my kind of picking;). My great grandmother used to say the only picking that counts is what made it to the kitchen, all the rest is the fun. They grow 13 different type of berries. Nectarines will be ready in a couple of weeks and more fruits after that! Check their facebook page for updates and what is ripe!

J&K Farley Farms They charge 65 cents a pound! They open when fruit is ripe close when they are out of it! They expect to open back up in a couple of weeks for Peaches and mid-July a lot of fruit come in. Once mid-July hits they are open pretty much the rest of the season. They also have animals to pet, a picnic area to eat in and if you call ahead, a free tour. Their website doesn’t tell you when they open up you need to check their facebook page or get on their email list.

Dinuba blueberry Farm (Cross Streets Mt. View/rd 68, Dinuba , CA 93618. Phone:559-743-5943) Call for an appointment but most weekends they will be having a you pick day! They don’t have a website or a facebook page.

Genesis Organic Farms open in July for you pick pluots ($1/pound) and heirloom tomatoes($2/pound). They will post hours as we get closer.

Fresno State Organic Farm Market does a you pick program also. There wasn’t a lot of firm information other than it is usually about every other weekend (the 23rd being a pick weekend) and I was told that prices were “pretty cheap”. You need to call them for details.

Awesome Spice Deal!

I got a great deal on one of my favorite brands at my Vons today! I got It’s Delish Poppy seeds half off!!! That means I got 9 ounces of quality (not Dollar Store) poppy seeds for only $1.75!  These are usually on the side of the end cap on the ethnic foods aisle. I have never seen them with the other spices.

They had a few different of the It’s Delish spices half off but limited choices (Tarragon, Allspice, White Pepper, Red Pepper flake). This is one of my favorite brands that I always buy so I hope they are just doing label change or something. I definitely hope to see my paprika and cinnamon back asap! I don’t know if this is all Vons or just local to Fresno or specifically the one at Kings Canyon and Clovis.

Don’t wait around!

Dinner at Limon

So tonight I took my best friend Sara out for her birthday! We decided that we wanted to try some place new. Alisa had recommended Limon a while back so we took a gander at the website. Sara quickly saw many yummy items to tempt her taste buds. So we were sold! Now I am extremely picky and I was thrilled! The restaurant was very empty when we got there so I was a little nervous but it wasn’t even 5:30 yet;). But the service was great and so was the food. I ordered the lamb shank and it was delectable. Sara got the pork chop on a cabbage, mushroom, bacon hash. She loved it! You can see that they were both beautiful! The price point is was about $50 for the 2 of us. I highly recommend Limon!
