Rooting for Failure

I feel a bit guilty but I am now rooting for Pushing Daisies to fail and fail soon! It appears that if Pushing Daisies doesn’t get picked up by mid-January its creator, Brian Fuller, will come back to Heroes. While he wouldn’t come back on staff it looks like he will consult. Heroes has been lacking in quality this season even though there seems to be a great setup and a good base going.

Though I do think it is brilliant of Fuller to make ABC aware if they drop his show he will bury them on NBC with Heroes.

Great Gifts for Christmas!

Shannon over at Rocks at My Dryer asked for a list of great gifts. So here are a few we at the NerdFamily love!

First up is Blokus Classic. We all love this game. NerdDad and I can play against each other and the 7 and 5 year olds can also play. It is great!

We are also huge Mega Bloks fans! These big blocks are great family fun. They are safe for all our kids (down to less than a year and a half) and what else can you use to build arches big enough that the kids can crawl under?

SET Game is a great game because it can be as simple or hard as you would like it to be.

Quadrilla Marble Railway is an awesome family gift. It is composed of different pieces so you can make a new set up everytime. In addition to cool marble fun it also teaches logic and a bit of science. There are also many pieces so it is an awesome gift tradition to start. Then you can just gift them a new piece every gift occasion.

I also love giving books like Usborne Encyclopedias and The Chronicles of Narnia Box Set because they are books that appeal to everyone in the family and can be read (many times) together.

So there are just a few gifts I love! Click on my gift worthy category to see a few more.

Meal Plan Monday

I have a feeling that this week is going to be a little crazy so I am going to keep it easy.

Wednesday: Pasta Carbonara Florentine

For all of you who are out there wondering what is up with the broccoli well… It is the only veggie everyone in the family will consistently eat;).

Sticky Cheese?

We all have had this happen. We have some yummy dish covered in cheese that then needs to be covered with foil to cook. When you go to look at your lovely creation it has lost some of its cheesy goodness. Well, here are a couple tips that might help.

  • There isn’t a lot of magic in fluffy shredded cheese when baking. So just lightly press down your cheese into you dish.
  • While for freezeing you do want the aluminum as close to the surface as possible, the same isn’t said for cooking. If you are covering something to go right into the oven just add an inch to your length and tent it up a little. The it may look like a little pyramid;).
  • Another thing you can do is lightly (very lightly) spray you foil with a bit of non-stick spray. I don’t do this often but it has helped in the past.
  • If all else fails take a long, thin, straight spatula and scrape you aluminum as you are lifting it off your dish. Then you can save as much of the gooey cheese as possible!

A Great Homeschooling Benefit: A More Creative Halloween!

I made a discovery about a month ago. I realized that my kids were already making cool projects for history that could be used to go with Halloween costumes. I gently suggested that we not buy costumes this year but make ones from our history readings. The boys have decided to become Roman Soldiers and NerdPie is going to be a Celtic Queen with NerdPud as one of her daughters. The kids got all excited but then I started feeling guilty. These costumes will look so hand made, because they are. You are looking at some of the pieces to one of my kids’ Roman Standard project for history so obviously this won’t be professional craftmenship. But since my kids are in this exclusive school no on else will have their costume at the church event. Not only that but I get to save major money and I get to have my kids involved in creating something and isn’t that more value than just walking around and getting candy. I think so.

Now a disclaimer, these are going to look so made by kids and that really includes all the parts I am doing and came up with. I sewed a dress for my oldest daughter to wear under her cloak she is helping make and it is obvious that it is my first dress I have ever made. But oh well, it is one night and the kids won’t know any better as long as all of you don’t tell them;).

BattleStar Galactica

BattleStar Galactica is going to start airing their final 10 episode season starting January 16, 2009. I am a little disappointed that this is the final season but I am more shocked that January 2009 is so close. I am curious as to how many hours this season is going to total. According to the article the finale could run more than 3 hours. Very interesting.
