Eating Out Wisely with Kids

Ok, eating out with kids can get pricey! With 4 kids, one of which is an almost 11 year old boy, we don’t eat out very often but when we do we try to use some of the kids eat free deals. Various places have these deals but you have to pay attention to the times and limitations. Some offer you 1 free kids meal for each adult entree and some offer 2.

World Sports Cafe has a deal for 2 kid’s entrees free per 1 adult entree beginning at 6 pm on Wednesday nights.

Sweet River Bar and Grill has a Kids Eat Free night on Tuesdays all day. They do one kid’s meal free for each adult entree purchased.

Various Denny’s restaurants across town have a Kids Eat Free deal. According to all the ones I have checked with it is Tuesdays and Saturdays from 4pm -10pm. They will give you 2 kid’s entrees for every 1 adult entree purchased. Check with your Denny’s just to make sure.

El Torito does their Kids Eat Free on Wednesdays! They do 1 kid entree for every 1 adult entree purchased.

Chevy’s has Kids Eat Free every Tuesday. They also do 1 kid’s entree with every adult entree. The nice thing they do is sometimes they will consider an appetizer as an entree. I personally always got the Chicken Flautas before I went gluten free. And the kids’s meals include dessert;).

Marie Callender’s does Kids Eat Free on both Tuesday and Saturday! They do 1 kid’s meal per 1 adult entree. The kid’s meal even includes a piece of pie!

Cattlemen’s has a deal that is a little different. If your child is wearing their Jr. Cattlemen shirt (which is $9.99) they can eat free. They also eat free the day you buy it. It is a 1 kid’s meal to 1 adult entree deal so it is still limited.

Chili’s also does a Kids Eat Free deal but it is based on a coupon. You sign up for their e-club. Then every so often Chili’s will email you a coupon for Kids Eat Free, about once a month. Usually it is for a Tuesday but sometimes the coupons will span a few days. You can get 2 kid’s entrees for every 1 adult entree. And we have had the 2 for $20 count as 2 entrees towards that deal!!!

Mimi’s is doing a Kids Eat Free promotion for the month of May. Only for the month of May kids eat free on Tuesday night from 4pm- close. It is a 1 kid’s meal to 1 adult entree deal.

There are some great deals that really do help make it affordable to take the kids out! So what do you do to make eating out with kids affordable?

A Beautiful and Feel Good Mother’s Day Gift

A great gift with a great blessing!

I know this is going to be a shock but Mother’s Day is Sunday;). I know, you were planning on shopping tomorrow of Saturday. It is a common story….

So let me recommend a great set of gifts. Get Mom a piece from Macy’s Heart of Haiti. Mom gets something beautiful(jewelry, decor, etc) and you all can feel good about supporting a great cause!

The products are actually made by artisans in Haiti! This beautiful work helps support and feed these artisans in Haiti! And we all know how economics work. So by introducing new capital into the society it will help the entire community!

This is an opportunity to be deliberate with our shopping and encourage new industry in an area that needs it desperately!

I love this metal heart that I received! And there is so many other well priced, beautiful pieces! You have some many choices both online and in many of the Macy’s stores. So what are you still doing here? Go shop!!!

(Disclosure: I was given this beautiful piece to review!)

Our Life Mentality

“In a world of rugged individuals we strive to be individuals who make up a rugged family.” That was my first thought when I heard the phrase “Making Together Better” and the contest Brica is holding for Type A Conference sponsorship.

I know, I sound a little corny but we can say that “making together better” is really good summary of Nerdad and mine’s life mentality. (Frankly, I would include the kids but they are a little young to have a well defined life mentality.;) In today’s society it is easy to have great activities going all the time but family completely isolated for each other. And frankly, we didn’t go through all the trouble of have 4 kids to not enjoy life with them;).

We apply “make together better” in a variety of ways! 1 way is to use it as a threshold when we decide what “extra” activities we do! And I mean for all of us, including mom and dad! While I would love to be a killer blogger who is on every story and every headline and hits every awesome conference. NerdDad would love to have phenomenal software business. The kids would love to take Irish dance, choir, Awana, Robotics, be in a drumming group, Boy Scouts, Heritage Girls, sports and play with their friends every day.

There just isn’t time to do all that and spend time as a family, much less eat and sleep. So we have decided to plan our schedules to make not only our individual lives better, separate from each other, but make our lives better together as a group.

So we do! There is only so much time so if an “extra” activity can bring value to the whole family, it gets a priority!

When I decide what blogging things I attend and focus on I take my family into account! I love working on video games and movies and tech because I enjoy that with my family so much! NerdDad sometime chooses to spend his extra development time making a game for the kids because it brings a value to the family! The priority activities for the kids are ones that more one of them can do! Robotics is a huge priority because not only do a couple of the kids do it but NerdDad coaches!

Not to say that we never do anything that only 1 person will enjoy but those activities have to fit around everything else! We are not a family who smiles upon the idea of always having to be on the go or eating in the car for us. Not that it is wrong, just not what we want;).

We make together better by making together a priority!

Thanks to Brica for the opportunity to try to win a Type A sponsorship! Check them out at their website as well as Facebook and Twitter! And if you feel so inclined tell them I should win;).

With all the craziness life it is nice to read articles from Barbara Frank about Keys to a Successful Homeschool Convention Experience (part 3) do we can be quipped to handle this all just a little better!

I really think a great way to manage the chaos is found in Parent at the Helm in R*E*S*P*E*C*T: Find Out What it Means to Your Kid. It really can calm everything  to feed our kids well too! Mel’s Mouthful on Mothering looks at 32 Snacks for Energy to feed your kids!

Tablet Shopping

Our Current Tablet Collection

Every time a major holiday comes up I hear a lot of questions about how to choose tablets for gifts. What is worth the money, what will perform the best, etc.

I am going to start off by saying what I tell every person that asks me my opinion, only you can make the choice! Tablets are fun and great. They all have up sides and down sides.

First analyze everything that it would be used for:

Email
Books
Games
Browsing
Working
Social Media

Then look at the different types of tablets and what each one is known for:

IPad is known for being a high end tablet with good resolution and camera. It has full integration with iPhones and Macs. I find them hard to get a lot of work done without an additional keyboard but they easily purchased. You can surf the web and watch movies. The iPad is also a pretty good e-reader but there is a glare on the screen so it is a little like reading of a computer that you can hold. But the iPad comes with a very large price tag and its accessories can be pretty pricey too.

10 inch Android is on par with an iPad except the price has a larger range. You can get the very expensive to the inexpensive. The quality and resolution can also vary. You can have all the same functionality as the iPad. The Android environment has a more open development field where apps don’t have to be approved by Apple. And if you like to tinker you can change operating systems on Android tablets.

7 inch Android tablets are extremely portable. They are good for social media and email. They are decent e-reader with the same issues as the iPad. Web surfing and movie viewing are a bit more cumbersome due to the smaller size.

Kindle Fire/Nook Tablets are very similar. While they carry the Kindle/Nook names, the are not dedicated e-readers. These are similar to the 7 inch Android tablets. Except they are built on an older stylized Android operating system. They are a very popular tablet but it isn’t as powerful as some the other tablets.

Readers (like the Kindle and Nook) are e-readers. That is what they do and that is pretty much it. My favorite is the Kindle. It is small and light. The magic though is e-ink. They don’t have a shiny screen and so the words show up like paper. You won’t get the same eye strain as reading off of a shiny tablet. And they are a lot cheaper than a traditional tablet. If the only reason you want a tablet is to read this is your best choice.

So there are a few things to look at. Tablets are fun just do a little thinking ahead so that you only spend as much as needed to get exactly what you want!
