Cosmic Mysteries in Your Kitchen

By User Zeimusu on en.wikipedia, via Wikimedia Commons

People worry that you can’t really teach your kids science without a school lab. Well, try these on for size;)!

You can simulate a white hole in your kitchen sink. Wired has a great article on not only how to do the white hole but a great break down of what it really is.

Then you can pop over to OrbitingFrog to read how to measure the speed of light. All you need is a microwave, a microwave safe square (or rectangle) dish and marshmallows or chocolate chips! It is an awesome experiment!

So go, learn and have fun with science!!!

Chocolate Whipped Cream

Homemade Chocolate Whipped Cream. It makes my mouth water just thinking about it. This is an easy accompaniment that wows whoever sees it. I always feel a little guilty how impressed people get;). Here I just have a dollop of Chocolate Whipped Cream on top of a Sweet Wonton Crisp with 3 raspberries. (I could take it a notch further with a sprinkling of sweet cocoa or powdered sugar.)

Very Sweet Version (NerdDad likes it very sweet and chocolaty)
1 cup heavy whipped cream
2 tablespoons powdered sugar
3 tablespoons sweet cocoa powdered (I use Ghiradelli’s)

Start whipping your heavy cream (I have a stand mixer that I use) on high. Then sprinkle in the powdered sugar and continue whipping. 30 seconds later add the cocoa powder. Continue whipping until it is in stiff peaks.

For a slightly less sweet version (how I prefer it) only add 2 tablespoons of cocoa.

Which ever version you make it will rival anything you have seen in a fancy restaurant’s dessert;).

Sweet Wonton Crisps

I love making these super easy Sweet Wonton Crisps. I use them as the base for napoleons, bite sized desserts and just as a chip. I use the square wontons for full size dessert napoleons and I cook them the same way.

Preheat your oven to 375 degrees. Then lay out premade wonton skins (found in the Asian section of the grocery)  on cookie sheets. Then take a spray bottle of water and mist the tops of the wontons. Then sprinkle sugar over the top. Pop the cookie sheet in the oven for 8 minutes or until the wontons crisp start to brown around the edges.

Then transfer them to a cooling sheet with a spatula (they will still be bendy) and let them cool completely. If you cool them on the sheet they can be a little gummy on the bottom.

Then throw them in a zip top bag and they will keep for a few days!

Half My Stove Top

Scary and dirty isn’t it. I often wipe my stove top but rarely really clean it. I have talked before about my paralyzing perfectionism. If I don’t have time to do something perfectly, I have a hard time doing it. So I rarely get around to cleaning things like my stove because who has a few hours to scrub it completely down?

That is why this post is about half of my stove top getting clean. I aimed at getting it all done this morning but after scrubbing on it for over an hour, I had other things I had to get done. I thought that I would just finish this tackle in a few days and then post this next week.

But I thought about life and my kids. I don’t want them to have my problems;). You know what, I want them to get things done one bite at a time. That is the only way life is managed.

So here is my tackle, half of my stove was cleaned! But at least half of my stove is clean;). Next week, I will post the other side.

Meal Plan Monday 10/18

It is that time to think about the week’s food again. I skipped last week because I was out of town and that led to a fair amount of chaos;). So onto this week’s plan!

Monday: Mushrooms, Hamburger and Rice skillet
Tuesday: Sausage Egg Casserole, Raisin Bread French Toast
Wednesday: Corned Beef, Buttery Rolls, Broccoli
Thursday: Shrimp, Spinach and Pasta in a Butter Garlic Sauce
Friday: Chili Mac for the Kids

Premiere Edition of Theology Thursday!!!

Welcome to the premiere issue of Theology Thursday! If you have written anything this week that has anything to do with your theology, please link up! It can be straight from scripture or just an inspired thought that has to do with your relationship with God and Jesus Christ! Make sure that you link to your specific piece and not your blog, or the link will be removed. Also, please only submit a piece that fits this subject or it will be removed. And please link back here so that everyone else knows where the fun is!

On to my submission for this week;).

Romans 6:20 (NASB) “For when you were slaves of sin, you were free in regard to righteousness.”

This is a verse that popped up in my Bible Study this week and we were asked to expound on what we thought it meant.

At first I was going down the road that is familiar to me. How can we as Christians get mad at people because they don’t keep Christ’s rules when they don’t even buy into His lordship or that He is the Son of God? Because apart from Christ what rules are there? What morality truly is there? Sins against man are very clear (killing) but not universally accepted as wrong. And sins of against God can’t truly be known without a clear knowing of who God is. Christians not understanding this is a pet peeve of mine. For example, why do you lecture that sex is meant for marriage only when the person you are talking to does not accept the sanctity of marriage.

But then I got another insight. What about those people who seem to be Christians for a time but then go in the complete opposite direction? Some, I daresay, actually seem to bring a non-Christian evil into the church (and I am not just talking a sin, but a sin followed by them walking away from God completely). Or say that Jesus Christ is not the Son of God but do some righteous things? How does that relate to this verse? This comparison hit me, not sure how solid it is so I am just throwing it out there.

When you work at a job you are not expected to obey and produce results for another employer. While if you did, the results would be real and have value (possibly even a check for you), but nothing further would be demanded of you. Likewise, you wouldn’t necessarily receive a benefits package beyond that one exchange or series of exchanges. Traditionally contractors don’t receive all the benefits and perks that employees have because you have your loyalties elsewhere.

Righteousness when you are ruled by sin is similar. It can produce good things but the long term benefit, the light yoke of Christ and eternal life, just isn’t there. That explains that “good” person who never chose to give Christ that lordship over their life and so they never became slaves of righteousness.

That is my thought for the week! Now jump in with your link!

As a Deer Panteth

I went and visited my dad this weekend outside of San Antonio and there are deer everywhere. But they aren’t the giant ones I think about, they are kind of little and so cute! I even saw some wagging their tales as they ran! All I could think about every time I saw them was the Psalm the has “as the deer panteth for the water, so my soul longeth after thee” (yes, that is King James). There was a song I love with that!
