Geeky Links 2/4

Ok, I am so looking forward to the Avengers coming out. But instead of kicking off this week with the trailer we have all seen many times I thought I would post an awesome Swede that was done by a local group here in Fresno!

Gizmodo has a first look at the Lego Lord of the Rings minifigures! They are so cool!!!

BitRebels has a super awesome Star Trek Enterprise inspired coffee table. It is awesome!

The Independent has some awesome do at home science experiments that we are going to have to do!

Easy and Affordable Entertaining

Super Bowl parties are always a lot of fun! We want to make sure that they are fun and easy for the host as well as the attenders! That comes for balancing both time and money! There are some easy ways to get the most out of your party pennies and your weekend.

1. Don’t make everything and don’t buy everything! Analyze what is a good investment of time to money! If the ingredients are expensive or the process time consuming then choose to buy that dish! A good example is tortilla chips. You can get a giant bag at Costco for less than $4! It would take you hours to make them and due to the process, they probably wouldn’t be as good;). But ministuffed red potatoes/potato skins are super cheap and easy to make! And refried beans are even cheaper and easier;).

2.Use you attendees for those items you don’t want to cook!!! I know that things like wings and breaded cheese sticks are very popular but they are hard to perfect at home. This is the perfect thing to ask someone to bring! You just mention that you saw a coupon last week (which I did;) and that would be an awesome contribution! Then they feel good because they get to bring something and don’t have to cook! Win/win!

3. Be honest!!! We all want to offer a variety of veggies but no one ever eats them! I love the look of the $10 veggie plate from Costco. But do you know how many times I have had left over broccoli that I have cooked for dinner or the tomatoes I later have to use in salads? Umm, just about every one;). Save yourself some money and buy a few pounds of baby carrots for a couple of dollars. Those will actually be eaten! And you don’t need celery unless you are serving wings or Bloody Mary’s;).

4. Themed food that all works together and can hang out all day is always a win! I tend to go with a Mexican theme.  Up to a few days before I will make a huge batch of beans in the crockpot. I will turn most of them into refried beans the day of. People are always impressed with homemade refried beans but it is so cheap and easy! Then the day of I put a big old cheap pork roast inthe crockpot with plenty of seasonings and make a batch of rice in my rice maker. I pair them with fresh corn tortillas from Vallarta (or any Mexican grocery), Costco tortilla chips, salsa, guacamole, shredded cheese, sour cream, shredded lettuce, limes and queso fresco. Then let everyone eat how they want! Some will have carnitas tacos, some will do nachos and so on. Everything will hold great all day!

5. An easy alcohol plan! We are not big drinkers so I always have ice tea and soda on hand even if we do have alcohol. Every party planner I have ever read says to focus on 1 signature mixed drink. For a Mexican theme you can always go with maragarita’s. You have the cocktail and the components so an industrious gues can make what ever they want out of the components;). And if you are beer drinkers have plenty of just 1 kind on hand. When you have to many drink choices it can be over whelming to figure out how much of what to buy;).

I wouldn’t shop for alcohol at the grocery store. I would hit Costco or Beverages and More. You can get on the BevMo frequent buyer plan an,d even if you are like me and only buy alcohol once a year, it adds up! Also you get emails so you know when your favorite brands are on sale. Extra win? They take manufaturer’s coupons!!!

6. Dessert is essential! It doesn’t have to be fancy but does need to exist! Have a batch of brownies or some cookies. Pair it with a bowl of candy and you are good.

And I have left my number 1 rule to the end….DON’T HAVE FOOD THAT YOU OR FAMILY WILL NOT EAT AS LEFTOVERS! No one wants to ever run out of food. So make sure you will eat the leftovers. Then when you are still recovering the next day there will be plenty to eat in the house!

Entertaining is really that easy!

Who?Comics App

Thank you to who?Comics for sponsoring this post and encouraging my child to read biographies in comic book form! Please click here to learn more about the app. And follow who? Comics on Twitter for updates

As you all know, I am a big fan of reading and an even bigger fan of learning! So you can just imagine how excited I was to  receive the opportunity to use the who?Comics app on my iPad with my kids!

Who?Comics is a free app and it comes with 2 books. There are 27 other books available for purchase. Some are sold individually but there are also packs available.  Which of course, are a better deal;). So I got the Scientists pack (surprise, surprise;).  Right off we checked out Marie Curie and Thomas Edison!

Here is a little detail you should know going in. These comics are not the super quick, over view type comics. There are 150 pages of details about the subject’s personal life. Which means it isn’t a quick read! I was very familiar with Marie Curie and I learned so much! NerdPie and I even cried at 2 different spots.

So what is my overall feel? Well, I love the idea of having these on the iPad for easy access! The art is clear and the story line moves at a good clip. This isn’t going to be a situation where you can read the whole thing in the doctor’s waiting room and that can be a good thing. This app was developed over seas and so there are a few translation issues. Due to that and the fact that these really deal with real life situations, I would make sure you child is near you when they read them. I had to explain about certain illnesses and certain historical events that were mentioned in the books we read. There was an assumption that the kids understood everything but mine had quite gotten there yet. (For example, why and how Poland was being occupied By Russia and how they weren’t supposed to speak Polish.)

My kids thoroughly enjoyed these comics! My kids are even asking for books from the library so they can learn even more! Both about the people in the stories and the science they discovered!

Thank you again to who? Comics for sponsoring my post. Please click here to learn more about the app. Visit who? Comics for updates. I was selected for this opportunity by the Clever Girls Collective. All opinions expressed here are my own. #CleverWhoComics #spon

How Girlie Nerds Play

I am very aware that my girls are both very nerdy and very girlie. I mean the NerdPie’s favorite color is purple and the NerdPud is pink!

So it should come as no surprise that my girls were playing Mommy and Baby outside together. But not without a nerdy twist. NerdPie (the 8 year old) was coming back outside after dumping the garbage. From the door she says, “Where’s my baby cyborg?” Yup, that is my girls;).

Geeky Links 1/28: We’re Back!

So I taken a break for a while I realize that I miss geeky links. I just see to many cool things through the week. So I am back;)!

I just think that this is cool!

Ok, I saw this tweet by Alan Tudyk and now I am so in for Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter. I think this could be awesome!

Imgur had a series of pictures on the Indiana Jones Engagement Ring! I guess he gave her a bag of sand at first and then later gave her the ring. It is so cool!

Ok, so who wouldn’t want a little Isaac Asimov graffiti? We need this in the Fresno Mural District;).

So have you seen some great geek stuff you want to share? Please let me know in comments!!!

A Sign I Might be a Spoiled Wife

Okay, I’ve always been very open with the fact I’m a spoiled wife. My my line is even “I’m spoiled and I like it that way”. But I realize there’s yet another sign that I was very spoiled wife and this one is a little extreme.

So NerdDad and I plan our evenings that we do separate stuff on the same night and we hire a babysitter. We find that more a more efficient so that we spend more nights at home together. The plan for tonight was that I would go to the Girls Night Out happening a New Covenant and NerdDad would work. So about three o’clock this afternoon I was upstairs doing laundry and curling my hair. When all of a sudden I hear the Nerdster say, “I have to throw up!” of course the first thing I do is to tell him to just go throw up and of course he threw up mostly on the bathroom floor.

As you can imagine, this is change the plan for tonight. But here’s the deal I have with NerdDad, if no one else throws up (including the Nerdster) I will stay home with the kids tonight. But, if there is anymore throwing up NerdDad will stay home with them. Yes, some of this is because I do not handle throw up well. But I think most of this is because I’m spoiled. I mean how many dads do you know who’d be willing to be the parent with the puking child when there are options?

So yes I’m spoiled and I like it that way :-). And my husband’s a rockstar!

A Simple Outfit

So this is what I wore on tv last week. I don’t know if it was the right choice but;). There is something about a crisp white shirt that just always makes me feel pulled together. So I paired a white shirt from Lane Bryant with a denim jacket (that is my go to) that I got on clearance about 18 months ago from Fashion Bug. I think it looks pretty cute with my awesome Lee jeans that I got at BlogHer! I actually wore my red heels on camera but ran my errands in my CLaundry black flats. I added a multi-string necklace to give it a touch of edge. Pretty easy to wear.
