A Look at Time Capsule: Medieval England

Medieval_PBOOK0011

I think it is well know that I love unit studies! You can delve into a subject as deep as you want and have a ton of fun with it. But I am lazy so I don’t put unit studies together for my kids like I might enjoy. So I was stoked to receive a copy of Time Capsule: Medieval England!

This is a 12 week unit study with over 300 pages. It is aimed at 2nd through 8th grade so it is great for multiple kids in a family. This is one of those books that you just have to open and go!

It is broken up with daily lessons so you can take bite sized pieces. I personally won’t be doing it every day but interweaving into all else we are doing. I love the fact that the fun and creative activities are layed out for me. This not my strong suit so it is great to get a hold of something that lays out step by step an immersion experience.  And a fun one like that!

This is more of an immersion curriculum and not a facts and figures one. Meaning you will learn all about the instruments and what they sounded like or dress up like a monk. You may not learn the details of battles;).  But you will learn a lot! I am using it with a variety of more date and fact specific books that we can check out for free from the library to just round it out for my older kids.

In addition to the book, you get reading lists along with supplemental downloads and links to related information. What more can you want?

You can pick up a copy of Time Capsule: Medieval England from Amazon in both print and Kindle versions! What are you already doing for Medieval history? I don’t remember doing much in school with it myself so I am really enjoying it. Did you study it in school?

(Disclosure: I received a free copy in exchange for this piece! But all thoughts and opinions are mine alone!)

More Redstone, Machines, and Minecraft

Minecraft_Monday

Redstone, machines, and Minecraft come to life. What is better than that? First, I am going to talk about simple machines that you can use to make cooler and bigger machines and the tools to do them with. This tip not important with smaller machines but very important when you are doing cool bigger things. The power made by a redstone torch, button, or switch, only carries through 16 segments of redstone wire so to make a ceiling that is lit all the time you will need some new tools. These new tools can be used for a variety of machines like automatic cannon, fireworks launching, and a TNT trap.

  1. Redstone repeater: This is very helpful because you can put it in the wire but it doesn’t power the wire unless there is power on one side of it. To make it put cobblestone across the bottom of the crafting table a redstone piece in the middle and redstone torches in the left and right middle.
  2. Redstone torch: This is helpful for the opposite reason, if you put this up next to the wire it will send out power but if one side has power it will stop the power going through. It has to be the only source of power or it won’t turn on and it won’t let more power go to the other side. You make it the same way as a plain torch with redstone instead of coal. This also can be used for light but not very well. It only glows at half the light.

Indoor Lighting.

This is a good simple project that shows you lots of cool items for this and all other projects I suggest you should make this in creative so that you know what you need.  First, you need redstone lamps which is made by having redstone in the corners and glowstone dust in the rest of the spots on the crafting table. Make a hole in the roof and put the redstone lamps to fill the hole but all the lamps must be touching on the sides (not corners as the only connection) of the lamps. Now put redstone on top of the redstone lamp. You put a switch next to redstone that connects to the redstone lamp. You can put it where ever you want as long as it is touching with wire the redstone on the lamps. Make sure to add redstone repeaters if you need them.

Nether Beasts in Minecraft

Minecraft_Nether_Beasts

Okay so I know that I have already done a post on the Nether but the monsters are just so cool that I have to tell you all the cool things about them.In my first post I told you about the common types but there is a lot more than just that. Here I am going in to the most hard core ones. I  am going to warn you I will assume that you have read The Minecraft Nether, The Freaky Dimension, if not be sure to see it.  So there is one thing that all Nether monsters have, fire resistances. Because they live in the Nether and it is full of lava and fire and all that weird stuff so all are fireproof and a lot use fire as a weapon.

1)Baby ZombiePigMan:  Okay so I am not sure if I have gone over this but zombies come in a smaller form called baby zombies. They are basically the same but they have less attack damage and less health and they are faster than regular ones.

2)Wither Skeleton: These are a bit more unique but based on the normal skeleton. These are only found in the Nether fortress near spawners or treasure but they can be all over the the fortress. They are Taller and gray and that is the major difference from a normal skelly.

3)Ghasts: Here is a cool fact ghasts sound like a wailing cat.Ghasts are the only flying monster or anything in the Nether Ghasts drop up to five gunpowder and sometimes a Ghast tear when killed even if it’s because of a random cause but only drops experience when killed by the player.

4)Blaze: This is one of the monsters that uses fire as it’s weapon. A Blaze can be described as a swirling ball of fire with a face which throws fireballs as you get closer. Spooky! Right so scary but they are hurt by water or sn ow balls so you could make a snow golem but it will melt kind of quick.

5)Magma Cube: This moves like a slinkys and look like the Nether you guessed it it’s the Magma Cube it looks like a mix of slimes and dark colors. These jump at you and hurt you on contact. When you kill the big one it splits into small ones then in to smallest ones.

So now you can battle any Nether monster you want tell me your fave.

It’s So Shiny and “Minecraft”y

shiny_Minecraft_Jewels

This is about the different precious minerals you find in Minecraft. These are found underground or can be traded from villagers. Here are just some of the minerals you can find.: iron, gold, diamonds, emerald, and lapis lazuli. These are mostly used for tools but that’s another post

Iron: This is the most used minerals because it can be used for specifically Shears(two iron in a diagonal pattern), Flint and Steel(one iron on the middle left side and a flint on the middle bottom), and buckets(two iron, one on the middle left side and on the middle right side and an iron on the bottom middle), This is able to make tools. This is the most common of these 5 and is found in like ten blocks from the surface to the bottom, but you can find them more the closer you get to the bottom. To get iron ore you need to smelt it (see http://www.nerdfamily.com/survive-first-night-minecraft/)

Gold: This is more valuable but weaker than iron. Gold enchants really nicely and is used in redstone machines sometimes. This can be used for tools but I don’t suggest it unless you are planning on spending lots of experience. This like iron you have to smelt it.

Diamonds: These are the most valuable stone because it is the strongest. The special item that you can make is the Enchantment Table (obsidian across the bottom and at the middle middle diamond on the rest of the middle and a book in the middle top). This also can be used for tools which are super strong.

Emerald:  This is used for trading with villagers and decorations. These aren’t very useful.

Lapis Lazuli: This is used for dyes and enchanting. you have to have at least one gem of lapis lazuli to enchant.

Make sure to tell me all about your jewels and tools.

It’s Raining Cats and Dogs or is it Ocelots and Wolves :Minecraft

minecraft_monday

This is about the Minecraft equivalent of cats which are called ocelots (which actually can be turned into cats cool) and wolves. I don’t have to much experience but I have read a lot about these and they are really cool. You get a cool house pet and they help you. First I am going to talk about one of my favorite animals the cat.

Ocelots: This is found in the jungle biome. They are very shy and will run away if you move close to them. To tame them you have to stand still near them with a edible raw fish till they start to walk towards you slowly the right click on the ocelot with as many fish as you need until the ocelot becomes  a cat. There is three types of cats tabbies, stripped and gray. I like the tabbie the most because  their eyes are blue and they have more colors but the different kinds are just different in appearance. Cats will scare away creepers they won’t come within like ten blocks.Cats will follow you but if you right click on them they will stay there. If you want to open a chest and they are sitting on it the chest won’t open till they get off. These are allergen free so even Nerdmom can have one don’t miss out on these Creeper free days get one now

Wolves: These are found in the forest biome and taga or snowy forest biome. Wolves are hostile to you at first if you hurt them. To tame them you need a bone and you feed them the bone then they will follow you. There is only one type of wolves gray. Wolves will protect you if you get attacked. Unlike cats, wolves can lose health and you can tell their health by their tail, if their tails are upright they have full wealth and if they have tails down they are about to die. If you feed them raw meat they will have more health.

I hope you get lots of pets. If you get a wolf and a cat you will be protected almost all common monsters. Let me know if you have any cool pet tips.                   Nerdpie
