Oliver’s Labels Review

I have lots of kids, which means I have lots of stuff that I have to keep track of so we don’t lose it all. So I was very excite to check out a sampling of labels from Oliver’s Labels. These are awesome!

Now one of the things motherhood has taught me is that the kids can lose everything. Shoes because they all took them off to run through the grass, Cubby vests because they get hot at Awana, not to mention backpacks and the such. Previously my strategy has been a black permanent marker on tags and that hasn’t worn so well. It doesn’t take long for the writing to get blurry between washing, sweating and being dragged on the ground. That is why I love these labels! They are clear and tough, extremely tough. They are even pretty water resistant so they work for water bottles and beach towels. I really love the shoe labels because they don’t slip and are clear to ready! I also love the fact you aren’t force to be cutesy, you can get you labels done in all kinds of cool fashion prints.

I really like the Found It Code. This is a free feature that Oliver’s Labels offers everyone. They print a code on each label and a website. If someone finds 1 of your things they just go to the website and input your code. Oliver’s Labels then sends you an email. I love that for security’s because walking around with a fob that has your name, address, and phone number makes me nervous.

Now I admit that I am a cheapskate. I have seen these before but never bought them. Part of the reason why is that I never saw the prices. It is not nearly as pricey I would have once thought. It would also make a great present. You can get a mixed pack for less than $30. And to sweeten the pot, Oliver’s Labels has provided a coupon code for 10% off! Just use “LABELEVERYTHING” before June 31, 2009 (when it expires;).

So go, check it out and let me know what you think!

Magic Marker Monday

My 3 older geniuses made these cute pictures this week. The fun part is looking at the progression as you go up the age tree. The blue one is the Nerdlings (almost 4). It is sparse with just a few foamies. The bottom right one is NerdPie’s (almost 6) and she was making a jungle. Then the top one is the NerdBug’s (almost 8). He actually made a full picture. It is interesting to watch.

Now go see some more masterpieces!

The Next Food Network Star: June 7

It is time for a new season of The Next Food Network Star. I love me some AB (Alton Brown) so I hope he still has a major role but other than Bobby Flay, I haven’t really seen any other 1 person highlighted as a major contributor.

So lets buckle in and see if this year’s crop has what it takes.
Right off the bat Jen bothered me a little. She is a “housewife 2.0”? Is that cause she works too? If so, she better step back because this 1.0 gets a little edgy when I am told that I am out of date. I will try not to hold that against her. I am excited to see a housewife in the bunch with Melissa. They overall look pretty good. But we won’t know until we see the food.
As soon as everyone gets there the contestants are summoned to the Food Network Kitchens. Then we get the selection commitee who walk us through the intro and basics. Susie seemed to stress integrity so I am interested how that will come in later.
First challenge is catering a party celebrating Food Network’s birthday with 75 guests and Access Hollywood. All the big names will be there including last year’s winner, Aaron McCargo. They were split into 2 teams, green and red. The green team is Teddy, Jamika, Brett, Jen and Melissa. The red team is Eddie, Michael, Katie, Jeffrey and Debbie. They have $1200 to shop with.
Green Team:
Brett(Captain): Beef Tenderloin with Red Wine Sauce and Butternut Squash Soup
Teddy: Herb and Truffle Infused Potato Gratin
Jamika: Floribbean Shrimp Cocktail with Mango Jicama Slaw
Melissa: Apple Tart with Carmel Drizzle
Jen: Green Beans with Walnuts and Grape Tomatoes
Red Team:
Debbie (captain): Red Curry Crab Cake with Spicy Mayo
Michael: 5 Spiced Tenderloin with Pickled Vegetable Slaw
Katie: Beet, Pomegranate, Orange Salad and Sauteed Swiss Chard
Jeffrey: Achiote Grilled Zucchini Mushroom Ragu
Eddie: BLAST balls (bacon, lettuce, avocado, sprouts, tomatoes)
They get 1 hour to shop and each team sent 2 people. Michael was sure that the Red Team was going to have budget issues. Whole Foods didn’t have the pre-made biscuit dough that Eddie was going to use so Debbie made an executive decision to change the dessert. When the Green Team checked out they have $200 left that they didn’t spend. The Red Team put a lot of stuff back because they didn’t have enough money. Jeffrey ended up getting almost none of what he needed. The dessert that Debbie decided to make was angelfood cake layers with a riccotta cream mixture.
Brett is a high energy type of captain. Whereas Debbie is a bit happy go lucky. Melissa is a bit overwhelmed. She keeps saying that she is home cook and that the commercial kitchen and quantities are overwhleming. Katie was shorted her dijon but luckily the other team had some she could use. Melissa is really worried about her crust.
Then the finalists got to go and talked to all the party guests to intro their foods. Brett kind of froze. Brett didn’t say he had a team but the staff. Teddy was coming from the mind of a chef. That is great because I am sure that no one there from Food Network knows anything about a chef’s mind.
Then we got to the eating for the Green Team. Melissa’s tart was a hit. They liked Jamika’s slaw but not her shrimp. Jen’s green beans bombed and they didn’t like her personally either. Teddy’s gratin had great flavor. They didn’t like Brett’s meat or the mushrooms with them. Duff said it made him feel like he was in jail or the army.
We are onto the Red Team. The Angel food cake is a nightmare. Debby is very entertaining. Katie seemed a bit chatty and nervous. Before we get to the eating let me say that I think pickled veg on filet mignon is so disrespectful to the meat!!!!
Onto the eating! Duff asked if they really wanted to give him cake. The crab cake wasn’t perfect but the sauce was good. The filet had a lot of spice. The zucchini was good with texture and good flavors. Alex thought the salad was safe. Ann Burrell said the salad and swiss chard seemed to be from a dietician. The BLAST balls only talked of bacon. The cake was a complete disaster.
I think the top contenders for going home at this point is Debby for the cake, Jen for the green beans and Katie for the salad.
So we start with the Red Team evaluation. Bob questioned Debbie as to why she said that they were under budget when they had been grossly over. Then they hit the angel food cake and Debbie said it was a team decision. That is such a lie!!! But they liked her mayo and her presentation. They liked Michael’s meat and his presentation. They felt Katie’s swiss chard was a throw away dish and they felt she came off a girl without authority. Eddie’s BLAST balls bombed and he seemed too corporate in his presentation. Jeffrey’s food were a hit and Bobby really liked his presentation.
Onto the Green team. Brett’s food took a hit and his presentation also stunk. Jamika’s slaw was really good but the shrimp wasn’t. Her presentation went over well. Melissa’s tart was a big hit and she needs to temper her excitement. Jen’s dish wasn’t worthy to be served at the party according to Bob. He thought her presentation was a good start but it didn’t go well. Teddy’s gratin wasn’t cooked all the way but the flavors were good. He needs to amp up the presentation.
They didn’t pick a team to win. Instead they pointed out 3 individuals who shone: Jeffrey, Michael and Melissa. They winner was Jeffrey. Jen ended up being the first person sent home.
This season seems to be interesting. I wonder if there will be integrity issues with Debby. I am disapointed because there isn’t enough Alton Brown but maybe that will change. But over all this is a big hit not only with me but the 3 older Nerdlings!!!
See you next week.

It’s All About the Info

Awesome isn’t it? CraftyHedgeHog over at Etsy made this (sold out right now) and they also have a fetal pig. It gives me a great idea. As a homeschooler I am always looking for new ways of learning. Who says you have to actually dissect an animal? I know of many moms who don’t want to do it for a variety of reasons but worry. This is a rite of passage. Can you have a good grasp on biology without doing a dissection? Well, I don’t know. Couldn’t you do an awesome 3-D model like this? Since it is all about learning the information, you imagination would be the limit.

I really think this translates to all areas of learning. There is no end all thing you have to do. It’s all about the info!

Independence Day with a Bang?

I understand that the 4th of July is to celebrate all our rights but I have never heard about bringing your gun to church to celebrate. Apparently this is what 1 pastor inviting his parishioners to do for the June 27th service. Now you aren’t allowed to bring them loaded (and there will private security to check) but there will be lots of festivities including a gun raffle. I find this really interesting, not disturbing but a little odd. I am curious if this give my pastor any ideas. I mean we do have a gun club at our church (well, they go somewhere else to shoot;). What do you think? Pastor?

Ancient Gingerbread

This is one of my first recipes. I started making it when I was probably a freshman in high school and it was always one of my mom’s favorite things I would make. It was out of the first Jewish cookbook I ever got. Fresh it is great with Cool Whip or butter (for breakfast). If any of it lasted my mom would cut it into cubes and pour milk on it like cereal.

Ingredients:
1/2 cup of shortening or butter
1/2 cup sugar
1 egg
1 cup molasses (or equivalent ingredient combo)
1 cup hot water
1 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon of cinnamon and ground ginger each
1/2 teaspoon salt
2 1/2 cups sifted flour
Procedure:
Cream the sugar and shortening together. Blend in the beaten egg. Mix the molasses and hot water separetly then mix with the sugar, shortening and egg. Then sift the dry ingredients. Combine with wet ingredients in stages, mixing after each stage. Line a 9 inch square pan, or a loaf pan, with wax paper (or parchement) and turn the batter into the pan. Bake 45 minutes at 350 degrees. Then cut it into squares and serve!

Fingerprint Friday

My life is crazy right now. I just had a crazy surgical procedure to kill some blood veins and I am having issues (I am fine just hurting and bleeding a little) but that makes for a difficult time. Most of that difficulty is the fact that I am a homeschooling mother of 4 kids all under 8 years old. The reason I mention homeschooling is that they are always home;). So now you are wondering where I am seeing God’s Fingerprint since all I am doing is complaining, right?

Well, I don’t just see God’s Fingerprints right now but also His grace and spirit through my husband. Not only did he take me to this procedure at Stanford (3 hours away), he also was willing to pay for a hotel both the night before and the night of so I didn’t have to travel right after. But all that was the easy part because then we came home;). Due to my procedure I can’t stay on my feet very long without being in quite a bit of pain. So that means I am not a lot of help around the house. He has stepped in and takes care of everyone including me, the kids and the house. He has cooked every meal, washed laundry, chased kids, done dishes and even takes care of my wounds. He even has paid for childcare 2 morings this week. Did I mention that this is only 1 of a series? His care and spirit through it all has made me love and admire him even more.
But he is getting annoyed. There is 1 issue in particular that is driving him a bit nuts. He feels that I don’t take care of myself enough. I try to do more than I should and ignore all the pain clues and common sense I should have. All I need to do is keep an eye on the kids during the few times I am alone with them and not try to get “things” done. He said that he takes better care of me that I do. It hit me today how much that in and of itself represents God’s attitude toward us. NerdDad just wants me to accept the gift of care that he is giving me and to believe that he means it. He tells me to rest and not worry about the house but I find it hard to accept. It overwhelms me that he can care for me so deeply to the point that the rest falls away to him. I am truly blessed.
That is how God cares for us. We have been offered salvation and all we have to do is accept it. Salvation that will take care of our every eternal need. We can’t earn it, we can’t deserve it. The Father offered it to us soley based upon the fact that He loves us and wants to care for us. We just have to accept and let Him!

Twitter Sued?

Someone claimed to be someone else on Twitter (shocker). Now Twitter is being sued. The manager of the St. Louis Cardinals had someone start and Twitter as him. So why is he suing Twitter? Does he really have any standing for a court case? I would understand if he was suing the person who was claiming to be him but Twitter? Is he just being a big baby?
