Hell’s Kitchen 6/24/8

Sorry for the delay in this week’s blog post but life has been nuts. So lets jump right in. Going in Christina is looking good but I don’t think that Ramsay likes her. I think he respects Petrozza but he is a mess in the kitchen. We shall see.

Ramsay is cooking for the final 3 and their families walk in. I remember the chefs having to do some cooking/challenge with the families so we will see why there are here. So after the families leave, the final 3 will have to recreate the dish they just ate. Christina seemed to be the only one on the ball enough to try to figure out what was in the dish.

Ramsay did provide them 1 sample dish for them to try again. Christina seemed to jump right in. Christina went with a white bean puree that she was really sure of. Corey used a parsnip puree and Petrozza didn’t use a puree at all. Christina’s mom was right on the cream as a binder but she didn’t use it. Corey used the wrong meat but finished the sauce right. Christina and Petrozza used the right meat (venison). In the end Christina won the challenge! That makes 3 in a row.

So Corey and Petrozza are on bar duty. That includes polishing classes and crushing block ice. I think that will really suck the energy out of them for service. Chrstina’s reward was a 3 course meal and sight seeing tour with Ramsay and her parents.

Of course we all remember that when we get to the final 3 they each get a chance to run the hot plate. Ramsay also gives each of them a little advice on how to do it.

Petrozza seemed to do pretty well. He caught the planted mistake along with some others. Christina seemed to be screwing up a lot while Petrozza was on the pass. Corey got on and seemed pretty aggressive and on it but she didn’t catch the sauce plant until it was to late. Christina took a second to get agressive but then she got the hang of being assertive. Christina caught the planted mistake (basil instead of mint).

Overall the service was completed well. After service Ramsay said he didn’t know who should go to the final. Corey was perfect on the meat station but not at the hot plate. Christina was good on the hot plate and not on the fish station. Petrozza was ok but not great. Then they each had to nominate one to go home. Corey nominated Christina because she becomes a deer in headlights when she get yelled at. Christina nominated Corey because she is a team member but not a leader. Petrozza nominated Christina because of the problems with service and that she will be a great chef but isn’t yet. In the end the final 2 are Petrozza and Christina.

See you next time for the final!

Kids Say the Darndest Things

I don’t know how many of you know but I have 3 dads. My mom has been married 3 times so like many others of my generation this leads to many parents;).

So, my kids realized that I had many sets of parents and at one point they wanted to know when they were going to add another dad to their collection. Well, we convinced them that that would never happen. A year or so passes. Then my kids realized that my birth father lives in Texas. NerdPie then assumes that my mom lives with him (since they don’t see her very much). I explained that they aren’t married to each other but are married (Grandma x is married to Grandpa y and Grandpa a is married to Grandma b). They seem to get it.

Until….
We were meeting the missionaries that (at that point) were considering moving into the extra house. NerdPie says out of nowhere, “My mom’s mom and dad weren’t married when she was born”. I just don’t know what to say other than we are trying to explain my life;). But when I tell her my parents were married, she says they couldn’t be because they aren’t married to each other;).

We will work on it without making it seem as something we think should happen. Oy! Thanks Mom and Dad.

Next Food Network Star Episode 4

So I found this great recap so you guys will only have to be exposed to my snark. So here are my impressions as they come to me!

First up is the technique video:
I think Adam did a real decent job with his artichoke cleaning. He goes with it and flows. Aaron was painful just blathering on about pineapple garnish. Kelsey did well but her rib wasn’t clean! Did Shane really try to pour out the coconut water with just 1 hole? This is why kids should pay attention in science class. 1 for things to come out and 1 for air to go in. If Nipa is trying to fake it she will have to quit giggling. Lisa doesn’t seem to realize that it is more important to communicate that to actually truss the chicken. I just wanted to cry with Jennifer.

Then the Challenge:
I think Kelsey may have locked it up by having Tilapia. Though I would have chosen the Fruit Loops instead of white chocolate. If Aaron doesn’t check the griddle temperature and then doesn’t compensate for over cooking before they even leave for the ship?? Maybe he isn’t the real deal. Did Adam really think falling on purpose would endear him to sailors? I am glad that Shane was finally able to get a decent presentation and his food to turn out. Lisa actually seemed very approachable but Tartar for Red Lobster? Eww! Nipa, grow a set and know that you will wash your hands later. It isn’t like raw fish will permeate you. I laughed at people like her in Bio class. Then the Ballywood dance lesson? I love it but you really have to consider your audience. I felt for Jennifer. I am an apologizer too. It just seems to have more integrity that way but I understand why that wouldn’t make for a good tv star.

Yes, I am harsh but maybe it is because it doesn’t seem that hard. Could I completely fillet a fish? No way, but getting a decent amount off? Sure!

I think the judges were totally right in sending Nipa home. Her time had come!
