Weekly Geeky Love

Tevatron data suggests new, unknown particle—but not the Higgs (via ARS Technica) Can you believe that an accelerator that is coming up with such great data and possible discovery may be shutting down soon due to lack of funding?

So am I the only one who is curious as to Kevin Rose’s new venture? Well, wonder no more! (Via TechCrunch)

There is a great interview with Bruce Boxleitner for the release of the Tron movies on BluRay! (via Hero Complex) While I liked Tron (the 1st one, haven’t seen the new one) and Babylon 5 but I will forever love Scarecrow!!

Ok, I have a problem with 3D tv. I think it sounds cool but between the glasses and everything, it just doesn’t seem practical. But things may be changing. Apparently quantum effect fuels color fast holograms (via New Scientist). This may be a huge step toward glasses free 3D tv!

Lock Up Your Daughters

So tonight after dinner the Nerdster (my 5 year old son) looks at me and asks if I know what the most precious gem is. I give him the typical mom answer of “What do you think it is?” Then he looks at me with his big eyes and says, “It is a single tear.”  He was totally deadpan with big, serious eyes. I melted.

Apparently he got it from a dragon book. It isn’t the source of the line but how you use it;). All I can think is lock up your daughters cause the Nerdster is loose;).

Tech Tuesday: Dropbox

Everyone knows that backing up your data is vital! And in this age of cloud computing (not being tied to one computer) you want to be able to has great mobility. Well, for this issues and more, I introduce Dropbox.

Dropbox is installed on your computer(s) and you place your files right in it. They are still on your hard drive but when you change them they are automatically backed up online. When you sign up you can get 2 Gb right off and more if you have referrals (so please sign up through my links;).

You can log in from any computer and access those files. NerdDad uses 4 different computers and doesn’t have to keep track of a jumpdrive;). I use is on our media computer and both sides of my laptop (Windows and Ubuntu). You can also share files with others. NerdDad and I no longer have to email documents back and forth!

So there is my ringing endorsement for Dropbox and if you don’t believe me, Techzilla also endorses it;). And if 2Gb aren’t enough, you can buy more space!

Make sure you come back next Tuesday to see what free (or nearly free) tech resource I am going to blog about on Tech Tuesday!

Frugal Homeschooler: English Teaching Aids

Last week my kids brought their grammar 5 a day with a question. “Mom, what is a superlative adjective?” Well, I was pretty sure I knew but you really don’t want to risk teaching bad grammar (even if I do use it sometimes;). So I started doing a little research. I found 3 pretty good sites that are pretty good! I am linking straight to the superlative part since that is what I was using;).

YourDictionary.com is a good place to define terms and see some usage recommendations.

English the Easy Way is actually a site that is designed to teach English! So everything is in a very simple presentation. I can see the kids using this on their own!

English Club is probably the most comprehensive site. It is also aimed at being an ESL site but it isn’t just for ESL but also for teachers. It has games, quizzes and more. It even has a section for English references for idioms, sayings and slang. Love it!
