Quick Comic Book Rant

Ok, this is the first time I think I have admitted in the blogosphere that I read comic books. Well, I read some (nothing religiously) and I am a little annoyed right now.

Apparently they are going to kill off 1 off the Fantastic Four. Now why would you do something like that? Are you going to change their name to the Fantastic 3? Are you going to permanently sub in people or have them on a rotating basis (yes, I know they have temporarily subbed in people before)? This is ridiculous.

According to Comic Book Resources the betting odds have been released and things aren’t looking good for Sue Richards (Invisible Woman). So what you mess with the one solid marriage in the Marvel world. I mean if we are picking people, I am not Johnny Storm’s biggest fan. I think the guy is a bit of a putz. But still. Leave the Fantastic Four alone!

Onto another comic book rant. I just started reading Surrogates (the one the movie was based on) and had to put it down. Not only was the story line boring, but the art stunk!!!! Here you are in a society that has developed surrogate bodies but the art is so sketchy that you can barely recognize your characters. It looks like someone drew in a story board and then forgot to get the art done before sending it off to be printed.

Whew, that feels better. I had to get that off my chest! Night all!

The Color Me Mine Struggle

Isn’t it unnerving when you go to take your daughter to a birthday party at Color Me Mine only to have an internal struggle the whole time?

We get there and right off she has to pick out a project to do. If course price is an option that I am in control of but then comes the difficulty factor. I want to let her choose what she wants but I also don’t want to get anything to hard and her get frustrated.

Then we pick colors. I want to have something she has chosen but she can’t really see how it is all going to match up. So do you try to push her toward colors that match up with undertones and the like? Or just let her go with it? An orangey pink with a light purple?

Then the painting begins. I recommend brush sizes but how much more to do you push? Do you push her to edge it right? How about when she accidentally gets a deep cranberry where she wanted light yellow? Do you shuffle to try to get it off or recommend that she do something else? Or wait for her to come up with her own solution? Do you try to help her get rid of brush marks? But how about when that means you would have to help her with the painting?

While the party was fun (it really was) I found myself on this emotional tight rope. I am pulling some strings while trying to not really be controlling while making sure that she felt all the choices were hers. Ugh! I am not quite sure what the mommy rules are with these things and I am sure I messed it up. But she had fun and it so proud of her princess bank. And isn’t it cute? It all seemed to turn out great in the end.

Gingerbread Panels

For the last few years I have made a gingerbread house. But last year I was recovering from surgery and never felt up to doing a gingerbread house so NerdDad suggested that we just have each kid decorate a panel that was then their’s to eat. It was a huge hit so we decided to do it in addition to the gingerbread house I will decorate.

They once again loved it and aren’t they adorable?

Net Neutrality or Free Market?

Ok, before you all jump down my throat please hear me out.

On the whole I believe that the government getting involved in any industry and regulating it or making rules for it is bad. I think the whole net neutrality thing is a perfect example. Why, because it is only needed because the government got involved in the internet game to begin with. I know it sounds far fetched and crazy but bear with me because I will get back to this point.

For those who aren’t familiar let me do a basic over view along with why it is needed. Those who are familiar hop down to the next paragraph. Basically by the Federal government adopting net neutrality it would mean that all internet would be considered equal. Why is that important? Lets supposed that your internet carrier is Comcast. When you are downloading your Netflix On Demand Comcast may slow down your service. That could be so you don’t “slow the network” or because they want you to get premium channels through them and not get Mad Men through Netflix. Either way you are paying for a service and your traffic should be considered equal with everyone else. Internet companies will point out that there are people clogging traffic by downloading bit-tor material (which is usually illegal) so it is their right to prioritize traffic. Of course I don’t agree with groups messing with internet traffic but the idea of the government telling businesses how to run just bugs me.

The internet, like traditional phone service, power, and garbage is semi regulated. It doesn’t seem to be a truly free market. Many places only have 1, maybe 2, choices for dependable, ground based  internet service. But why? Why isn’t this a wide open market? The lines that are in the ground are a utility and should then be open to all businesses using them. If that was happening I think the need for Net Neutrality legislation would be gone. Say Comcast decided to not allow media downloads, well then go to someone else. Would this possible effect pricing? Yes and in both directions. People who have no need for substantial traffic might pay less while people who use the internet as their exclusive source of entertainment along with regular gaming traffic, might pay a little more.  But there would be more choices and there more competition. If you want to prioritize traffic, go ahead but that would make many people buy the internet commodity elsewhere. The problem would solve itself.

So how about we just deregulate this along with all other utilities. Then maybe we can have a free market with not only the flow of ideas but internet traffic!

(That said, if we don’t deregulate Net Neutrality is a necessary evil.)

Chef Malia

Malia at her interview!

Recently I got the awesome opportunity to attend Red Robin’s Kids Cook Off Finale in Denver, Colorado! One of the big reasons I got the opportunity to attend is because we had a finalist from Fresno, California! This year Red Robin had a local blogger accompany each finalist.

Malia a sweet 7 year old little girl (same age as my NerdPie) who is just a rock star! I have already told you about this worldly girl and her international travels! She is showed up ready to play! She had an awesome burger, her speech memorized and a smile to melt all hearts!

After checking into the hotel Malia was off to the kitchen to practice making her burger! For the competition the finalists made their burger in front of everyone for the judges.

The Red Robin crew had all her materials prepped. They made sure that all the materials were right and that she was ready to put it together all by herself. Then they showed her the Red Robin way to wrap a burger. Did you know those little papers are called diapers?

There is Malia’s burger! Her Tropical Hawaiian Turkey Burger was so good! The part that I found most impressive was that the mango onion relish recipe was developed by her and her mom! Nothing out of a bottle there! For the competition the next day she made her burger for an esteemed panel of judges including a producer from Food Network!

Red Robin treated the kids so well and went all out! They had an AP photographer come in to take press pictures of the kids and it was such a kick to see her get interviewed just like on the red carpet! While she didn’t win, I think Malia really enjoyed the royal treatment! I am sure that this has been an experience that she will never forget!

If you want to read about the other finalists or get the cookbook with all the recipes (plus a few more) just hop over to Red Robin’s Kids Cook Off site! The winning burger (Donovan’s Mt. Vesuvius Burger) will be on sale later in 2011 with a portion of all the sales going to benefit the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children! Even though I really wanted Malia to win, I must say that Donovan’s burger but more on that later;)!

Chocolate Peppermint Biscotti

Chocolate Peppermint Biscotti
The Finished Product

I found this recipe years ago for a super yummy biscotti. It is so good that my kids even like it without anything to dunk in!

Ingredients:

1/2 softened butter
1 1/3 cups sugar
3 eggs
1/2 tsp peppermint extract
3 cups AP flour
1 tsp baking powder
1/2 tsp salt
1/2 cup crushed peppermint mini-candy canes
1/2 cup mini semisweet chocolate chips
melted colored chocolate

Process:

Mix butter, sugar, eggs, and peppermint extract. Then blend in baking soda, salt, and flour. Then blend in crushed peppermint pieces and mini-chips. Yes, the batter is extremely stiff so I use my stand mixer.

Then dump dough onto either a greased cookie sheet or a silpat (or equivalent) lined sheet. Cut the dough in half and form into logs 10 inches by 2 inches. Bake in a 350 degree oven for 30 to 35 minutes or until they are golden brown. Then cool the logs for 15 minutes.

Next cut the logs into 1/2 inch slices and place back on the cookie sheet on their cut sides. Bake at 350 degrees for another 15 minutes or until lightly brown and crisp. I don’t wait to long since my kids like to eat them plain;). then cool on a cooling rack.

Next melt the colored chocolate in the microwave. I microwave the Meltables at 30 second increments until it is really loose and drizzable. Then I just drizzle the chocolate over the cookies. You can also dip them in semisweet chocolate (my husband’s favorite) and sprinkle with more crushed candies.

Lego Creation!

My oldest built this during naptime and while it may seem simple it isn’t;). This is a ship. The yellow bolts sticking out are guns (saw that coming) but it is the inside details that got me. There are little spigots for hot and cold water , a shelf for storage and odd looking seats. I just love how he thought of tiny details. So cute!

Peppermint Bits

Ok, I love that this is the season of peppermint! I love peppermint in my cocoa, chocolate chip cookies and in my biscotti! And of course I have a great way to get peppermint bits super cheap!

The first thing to remember is that candy canes keep for a very long time;). So I buy the mini candy canes on the 75% off sales after Christmas. And yes always the mini candy canes because they are so easy to crush then!

So open them all up and put them into a gallon size ziplock bag. Make sure you put the bag in an easy to clean place. As you crush the candy canes they will make small punctures in the bag and leave a little sugar dust where ever it was sitting. Then hand a child a rolling pin and let them whack away!

Then you have a bowl of peppermint bits! You can add them to all kinds of delicious things. But keep them in an airtight bowl or bag because otherwise they will clump!
