Pedialyte and Stomach Bugs

Stomach bugs are a nasty thing. What makes them nastier is when they hit big families! Usually it isn’t just one person who gets it and everyone else feels fine. That is why I try to keep a stock of supplies just in case it wreaks havoc upon us!

I remember back 6 ½ years ago. I had a 2 year old and a not quite 3 month old. My dear, sweet husband had to go to a class that work had paid for down in Los Angeles for 4 days. 24 hours before my loving husband left I got a stomach bug that was so bad I could barely walk. When he left I was still at the tablespoon full of water at a time because 2 would make me throw up;). So as life would have it, by the time I was barely able to have a quarter cup of water, the 2 year old had his first bout of the stomach flu! Poor NerdDad missed it;). So that meant that we were getting by on water and soda crackers for days until I felt I could venture to the store upright with both kids. Needless to say that with the sudden onset of the stomach flu (it was only September) I was not prepared at all! And it being my first experience with my own little one, I wasn’t prepared for what he would need.

I vowed it would never happen again! Now I always make sure to keep Pedialyte, soda crackers, and broth on hand. I do not skimp on the brand when it comes to Pedialyte, it is just too important. When we first started buying it I would get the big bottles because it is cheaper by the ounce but we never finished it. My kids were also kind of thrown off by the fruit punch because they don’t normally drink it. So I was stoked to find the tetra pack in the apple juice flavor! It is the perfect serving size and cools down quickly at the first sign of stomach issues!

So are you stocked up in case of stomach bugs? Here are some essentials for a well-stocked medicine chest from Pedialyte!

Its Beginning to Look a Lot Like Halloween

Yes, I know it is August! But when you have 4 kids and you theme the costumes, that can take a little work. And work takes time;). Last year we did a half homemade, half bought Wizard of Oz theme. So I knew I would have to start thinking about it soon!

I got the opportunity to pick out a costume at Costume Discounters for this year and I was overwhelmed by all the choices. They have just about any theme for adults or kids. I didn’t realize that I would have that many choices so I realized that I had to consult the Nerdlings.

As a group we decided that we are going to do Star Wars but not just Star Wars, Star Wars Clone Wars. Well, they have 124 costumes/accessories for Star Wars. NerdPie has always wanted to be Asoka so I found this adorable costume.

I was excited to receive my package from Costume Discounters but not nearly as excited as my daughter! We are so glad that delivery was so quick because I don’t think NerdPie could have waited very much longer.  It is an adorable outfit with a belt and even a super cute headpiece (sorry you can’t see it in the pic but…). The light saber is ours but what kid who wants to dress up as a Star Wars character doesn’t have a light saber? The only other thing we have to provide are shoes but you can’t see them when you are wearing the costume!

We loved our experience with Costume Discounters was delightful and we recommend them!

WooHoo! PE And a Giveaway!

For those of you who have been around NerdFamily Things for a while, you know that we love Jumpstart software. So I was very stoked when we were approached to review their new Wii game, Jumpstart Get Moving Family Fitness Wii (just hit stores June 15th). I have to admit, I wasn’t sure how crazy everyone would be about this game because we just got a Wii Fit and it has been a huge hit over here. I wasn’t sure how a non-balance board physical activity game could measure up. But since it was rated E for Everybody, I figured I couldn’t go wrong. But I shouldn’t have been concerned at all! All 4 of my children loved it!

So here is the basic layout of the game. There are 15 different sports games in 11 different arenas. Brooke Burke takes you through playing different sports using the Wii remote and nunchuck. Before you start any sport she has a little instructional video that she explains how to work the controls and it does a close up on her hands actually doing it. I love that it repeats until you choose to move on to the actual game (what can I say, my kids sometimes need the repeats;).

Then they play fun games with Brooke Burke encouraging them. The games themselves are animating in fun environments. The kids get to pick out which one they want to use. They get choices like a Bug’s View, Outer Space, Volcano, and lots more. When they are done with each game they get a score and a count of how many calories they burned. Let me just say, these games can really give them a workout. My 7 year old was sweating after she did a race!

One of my favorite things is that they get exercise but they don’t have to use the balance board. When my kids get real wrapped up in sports it is hard to make sure they don’t jump on the Wii board. But with Jumpstart Get Moving Family Fitness Wii they can jump and run without hurting themselves or the equipment (and it is good for them!). Now like any video game, it takes some practice to get the hang of the controls. My 9 year old had to practice a bit to throw the football just right, etc.

My 1 real problem, you can not have someone playing this anywhere children who are supposed to be doing homework are;). They all start rooting for each other and get sucked in. But the up side is that when we are playing, the kids don’t have trouble waiting their turn!

Oh, new part of my reviews. The kids each want to have their favorite part listed;).

NerdBug (9): Likes the Football Throwing game because you get to throw and avoid defenders.
NerdPie (7):  Likes the Bug’s Life View because it makes the running race very fun.
Nerdling (5): Likes the boxing because he gets to use both the remote and nunchuck (though you can will all the games;).
NerdPud (3): Likes that she gets to run.

We are going to be using it as a guaranteed PE! It is a great “recess” activity for when they need a break from sitting so they can come back and concentrate! So we loved it, and for about $30, we think it is a great family present, especially for us homeschoolers!

Many Kids, Crumby Floors

I have a passel of kids…which means I have issues with food on the floor. Who doesn’t? One of the best tools NerdDad and I have found is an old school carpet sweeper, yes you heard me right. A carpet sweeper. One of the reasons that we love it is that the kids can use it all by themselves and they love it. It has no batteries or cords to cause issue. It is a simple push operated device. And it works! When I say that is works I mean it picks up dirt, hair, cheerios and just about any little annoying crumb that falls! For less than $20 you can’t go wrong. It beats all the pretend dust busters that people give kids and then the kids actually help!!!

Curious George 2 Soundtrack: Review and Giveaway!

My kids were so stoked when they saw me open up this CD. They absolutely love Curious George and frankly, who doesn’t love Curious George;)? My whole family had really enjoy A Very Monkey Christmas so we were all looking forward to Follow that Monkey!

I know that many of you parents are groaning, “Not another kids cd”. Well, this Curious George CD is a little different. The music is a little more mature than you might expect. The music is still fun but not as bubbly as many silly kids cds. My kids all like the CD but didn’t think it was as Curious Georgey as the other CD but really good (their words;).
So how would you like to win a copy?

Good Cheap Organizing Tool

I have lots of kids with lots of toys. I need these toys organized but bins, containers and other organizers are quite pricey. I have found a cheap alternative (relatively). You know that disposable plastic ware that you use when you are willing to not get them back? Well they are the perfect thing to organize small toys. They are uniform in size so they can stack. They are clear so you can see in. And they come in different sizes.

What is not to love?

Prima Princessa Review

Last year I was so pleased to introduce my kids to the Nutcracker ballet. All 3 of my oldest watched it with rapt attention but my oldest daughter (now 6) was mesmorized. See she desires to be a ballet dancer but those lessons are pricey;). That is why I was delighted to have the opportunity to review Prima Princessa presents the Nutcracker.

This is a delightful presentation of the Nutcracker with the addition of some ballet lessons. The San Francisco Ballet performs the delightful ballet while a Narrator explains what it going on. That is perfect for the little ones so you don’t have to read the story to them before viewing. It also has young students from the School of American Ballet that actually dance in between acts and in the bonus features to teach a few ballet moves. Some of the things it teaches the kids are glisade and arm positions. On the web site they even have coloring pages to go along with the Nutcracker!
This is so delightful! This is going to be perfect for both all my kids (8-2). My kids are going to love it!!! I already do! This is Prima Princessa’s second dvd. Their previous offering is Swan Lake and for just $12.99 they are great investments. So go check out the Nutcracker and enjoy the early start to the Christmas season!!!

Shandle Review

See the little thing sticking out on the toilet seat? That thing with the writing on the right side? That is a Shandle. I recently received a Shandle in order to review it in my home.

I have 4 little kids so this is quite a blessing. It serves as a handle to lift and put down the toilet seat to keep their hands (and mine) off the germs. They have styles that are imprinted with hand washing reminders, reminders to put the seat down or just designer prints. You can even get plain white to blend in.
The Shandle is made of an antimicrobial treated plastic. It is easy to install with just the included pressure sensitive adhesive. Just push it on! The only issue was that you need to make sure your kids don’t actual use the Shandle for 24 hours. And it is a long 24 hours;). I was very happy to see that even though it has a decal on it, the Shandle is very cleanable with bathroom cleaner!
I highly recommend the Shandle! At less than $7 it is a cheap and easy tool to keep your family healthy. There is even free shipping right now! It would also be great to add to a gift!

Keeping Parents and Kids Happy!

ArcadeI recently received a copy of JumpStart 3D Virtual World 1st and 2nd grade to review. My kids and I love it! For those of you that aren’t familiar with JumpStart, it is educational software. It has always been fun but wasn’t as always something kids would choose over video games. With the incarnation of the 3D Virtual World they have found the secret to kids hearts.

The kids start out creating their own characters, or jumpees, by picking out forms and then they personalize them by choosing all the characteristics. My oldest is excited that he can be a robot and NerdPie got to pick all her girlie things;). Then they cruise through the world that the conquering and earning jewels by completing academic missions. These are are in all different areas from sentance formations, charts, logical thinking, patterns, and lots more. There is also an entire online world! But that is another review;).
Then comes the parts for parents. First off I can register up to 3 kids, I love that. JumpStart will track each one separately. Then JumpStart sends me a progress report. They tell me what areas the kids have worked on and if they have completed it or if it is in progress. It is great because I can see areas the kids have mastery in and the areas they might be struggling in.
The kids seem to love this and I like that they are learning during their computer time without just doing drills. This would make an awesome gift the kid in your life if they are very familiar with computers or even just learning because it is so intuitive. So run out and buy a copy! Then let me know what you think about it!
