Odd Mom Out: Are You?

322_5ae35cd5eb76383d0f0703157a16e2ef

I admit it, I am an Odd Mom Out in most circumstances. Between the fact that I work from home and homeschool and am a geek and love to cook… Well, all those things don’t necessarily go together…

So I got a chance to screen Odd Mom Out, Bravo’s new scripted show, I was very interested to see it. And I was not disappointed! It is a fun and light hearted look at what it is to be, well, the odd one out. Not only are the characters relate able but it is a poke at all the Real Housewives shows (that yes, I watch;). Our Odd Mom, Jill,  is the more common sense rich person we all think we would be. We see her trying to retain her common sense and sometimes failing.

One of my favorite aspects of Odd Mom Out is that she does have a good support system. Her husband and marriage is very solid. Her best friend gives her that reminder of who she is and supports (or laughs) her when she gives in to the crazy around her.

It is very entertaining so I recommend you make yourself a Mom-osa (if you drink) and you kick back to watch the Odd Mom Out premiere on June 8, 2015 on Bravo! But you don’t have to wait for taste. Pop over to Bravo’s Odd Mom Out page to check out the trailer right now!

Into the Woods Hits the Big Screen

IntotheWoodsCouple

The movie production of Into the Woods is finally coming out!!! Those of us who are theater nerds have been waiting for this day for a long time! I recently got to attend a screening and it was worth the wait!

It has surprised me how many people were not already familiar with the long standing Into the Woods that was written by the legendary Stephen Sondheim. So for those of you who don’t know… This takes a few fairy tales and wonders if everyone always gets a happy ending. I believe the tag line is “Be careful what you wish for”. This isn’t a 1950’s song and dance musical but a deeper story with a slower score that speaks more to issues and deeper themes. And you need to know that before you take the 8 year old and she gets lost and finds the music a little boring.

All that said. Loved it! I can’t wait for my kids to watch it too.

The acting was great! The effects were breath taking. And is there anything Meryl Streep can’t do? Then there was the music. I was introduced to this music by listening to Bernadette Peters and Mandy Patinkin. “No One is Alone” holds such a special place in my heart it makes me cry. So I was prepared to be a little disappointed in the music but a girl can’t have everything, right? Wrong! The music was top notch! The cast was amazing!

I loved this movie!

I actually spoke to a variety of people after the screening to see what they thought and the mix really surprised me. When I spoke to adults who familiar with the stage version the praise was overwhelming! It turned out better than any dared hoped for. But then I spoke with some homeschool families that I knew who were there. They weren’t so positive. The only thing they knew before viewing it was that it was a Disney musical about fairy tales. They were disappointed. They enjoyed the first half (the more traditional part of the story) but then hated the second half. The parents said if they hadn’t expected a kids’ movie that they might have enjoyed it more. The kids, they didn’t care for it. They didn’t track the story well and found the music boring. But I really think that all had to do with expectations. If you are expecting Frozen or even Mary Poppins you will be disappointed.

My final analysis: I loved it. I felt the PG rating was very good because you need to look into it and figure out if this is something your own kids will like. I personally love the fact that it is an adult depth movie with very family friendly staging. I loved it and I recommend it!

A Look at Big Hero 6

bigHero6poster

Big Hero 6 is finally out! We here at the NerdFamily have been looking forward to it for a while so we were stoked to get a chance to check out a preview! Now I had heard this was a Disney movie but my husband had heard Marvel. And when you look at the credits you see some representation by both! To me this movie is the first fully new Disney integrated, animated feature movie and I am loving what the new Disney is looking like!

So not only was the Big Hero 6 visually stunning, the plot was really good. It is simple enough that it is resolved and the kids can understand it but deep enough that any adult can relate to it. And wow! It is a nerd movie.

The plot… This is always where I struggle because I want to inform you guys but I don’t want to ruin the movie. So some of the broad strokes. This is set in San Fransokyo and centered around Science and Tech College. It deals with a brilliant 14 year old and the relationship he develops with Baymax after tragedy befalls him and the city of San Fransokyo. He has a band of nerdy friends who help him by highlighting their own nerdy talents.

I love all the various nerdy personality types that they included in this movie. You had different types of male and female personalities and just about no stereotypes. Everyone had their own nerdy interests and they were all different. It was awesome! And they even had the line “Woman up” (which is something my mom used to say;).

We loved this movie and highly recommend it!!! It is fabulous and I think it was even worth the 3D! But there is one question I have heard many times. “What is Big Hero 6?” Well, you are going to have to watch the movie to find out;).

(Thanks to Disney for the preview passes! But all thoughts and opinions are still my own.)

A Look at Wizzy Gizmo’s Fast Track Bible Pack (and a Chance to Win One)

ftbp-slide
I recently got hold of a new product from Wizzy Gizmo. It is the New Testament Series of the Fast Track Bible Pack. These are like the uber Bible Flashcards!

These are gorgeously printed, double sided cards. On the front there is a great summary along with a couple of highlights. Then on the back there is a plethora of information.

1)Theme of each book
2)Outline
3)Key Chapters and their topics
4)Key Passages
5)Key Doctrines with the specific passages to support them
6)Key people

The New Testament set has 28 cards (there is an index card also with Names, themes, dates and chapters too) and retails for $14.99. They are for all ages and don’t assume any previous knowledge.

Now that we got all the details out of the way… I think these flashcards are great! They are not at all trying to replace the actual Bible because they constantly turn you back to the text. But they do help to stream line the information. You can use them as a memorization tool or as a devotional. I am planning on using these as a devotional tool with the kids. I myself am using them to work on my own memory work!

I really love these and look forward to checking out an Old Testament pack when it comes out. And how would you like to win a set?

Wizzy Gizmo has generously offered to give one set to one of my readers. Just enter the Rafflecopter!

I am not a costume person. I am not the mom who builds out her costume for Halloween or even themed parties. And frankly, neither is my husband. Vitex Gel Memory Foam Pillow Giveaway

WP_20140715_07_55_00_Pro

I have been eye balling those fancy memory foam pillows ever since I got my memory foam mattress. So you can just imagine how excited I was when I received a Vitex Gel Memory Foam pillow to review from Nature’s Sleep.

Pillows are a weird element to sleep. We know that they a huge effect on the quality and restfulness of our sleep. But yet, at least for me, it seems we don’t know what kind of pillow really work for us. Neither do we seem really willing to invest in pillows and that comes back to our lack of faith or knowledge of what a great pillow might be for us. That is where I found myself.

I have always had a variety of $5 pillows. That is what I grew up with and what I was willing to pay for. And every one of my $5 pillows was always different and I was never happy. Then I started traveling more and to nicer hotels. That lead to trying some nicer pillows including some memory foam ones. But when I saw how much they were, well leave it to say that I had sticker shock.

Jump forward to me falling in love with my memory foam bed. I starting looking more seriously at getting memory foam pillows. One of my big concerns (other than the price) was the heat. Then I got my hands on the Vitex Gel Memory Foam Pillow.

To start with, this pillow is huge! Measuring at 22 inches long, I can share with the husband if we are both looking at a tablet together. So it is safe to say that 1 pillow is plenty! It is pleasantly firm. What do I mean by that? Your head just sinks in and then is held perfectly. But the kicker? The cooling gel insert!

As much as I like memory foam, it is a bit hot and with a pillow that means sweaty hair that sticks up. And that is if I can sleep through the night (I don’t sleep well hot). But the gel insert keeps you cool without freezing you out. And that is what sells this pillow! And we put it through its paces when it came to heat because we have used it through the hottest part of summer (we hit over 105 in Fresno).

In full disclosure I had a hard time sleeping on my side because I am short enough that I just can’t get comfortable that way. But on my back it is heaven. And my husband likes it even better than me. It is now his pillow, unless I steal it when he isn’t looking;).

So how would you like to win one?

6 Items to Deal with Allergies at Home

filtrete allergies

I really do love living in Fresno! I also love the fact that we feed the world. But there is a down side to that. Things are always blooming and I am often sneezing! I have given a lot of thought and planning as how to deal with my allergies without relying on medicine alone. I already take a daily allergy pill so when my allergies are made worse by pollen, well leave it to say that taking another Claritin is just not going to do it.

There are three household tools you must have on hand to deal with your environment.

1. Filtrete air filters: Changing your air filters every 3 months is the first step towards battling your allergies at home! I don’t believe in cheap air filters and have use Filtrete’s filters for years. So I was stoked when they sent me a box! And while they did compensate me for this piece (with a box of filters), this opinion is totally mine!

Yes, you can get a cheaper filter but you really do get what you pay for in this arena. Cheap filters let a lot of dust and pollen through. And I love that they only have to be changed every 3 months. The less I have to be up in that dust laden area the better.

2. Vacuum Cleaner: A good vacuum cleaner is a necessity! We have a refurbished Dyson Animal Vacuum that does a phenomenal job. You need to make sure that it sucks up the dust and that you dump the can frequently.

Of course you need to vacuum your carpets to help with the dust but it goes beyond that. You can take your wand and go over both your couch and blinds to really clean out the air! You also should vacuum your vent cover before you change your air filter. It stops you from getting a face full of dust.

3. Corkscrew Microfiber Dusting Mitt: A great dusting mitt is key! The micro fiber grabs on to the dust so you aren’t just pushing it around. Since it is a mitt you can turn it inside out when you take it off to keep all the dust in until you are ready to shake it out or wash it.

Then there are three things you must have on hand to use on you in order to deal with your allergies at home.

4. Essential Oils: Ever since I began using essential oils topically my use of Sudafed has dramatically dropped. Rubbing a little eucalyptus and peppermint on my sinuses or placing some in a diffuser can help control watering eyes, sniffing and even sneezing. It also helps to stop my sinuses from getting all stuffed up! I even travel with them.

5. Neti Pot: Irrigating your sinuses may sound weird and uncomfortable but nothing beats it. I understand if it puts you off, it took years before I would do it. But I swear by it now! It keeps everything moving and really helps avoid sinus infections. It also just relieves stuffy sinuses and helps me sleep when things are bad.

6. Water: Yes, I said water. I know it sounds simple but it is essential. Water will thin any mucous but also will help you avoid headaches that allergies can bring on. It sounds silly but it is the most essential thing you need! Throw some peppermint leaves in it to give you a little zip and energy too;).

And there you have it. Six things to have on hand at home in order to combat your allergies!

(Disclosure: Filtrete did compensate me for this post. All thoughts and opinions are mine. Make sure to connect with them over on their Facebook page and Twitter. #HealthierHome )

A Look at the Downtown Grocery Outlet and a Giveaway

Grocery Outlet Collage

As you may have seen in  a previous post that I did, there is a new Grocery Outlet in Downtown Fresno! It moved into the space that was previously occupied by Fresh and Easy. I got a chance to go out and check out the new Grocery Outlet at its Grand Opening! I got a chance to take a tour of the store and have a chat with the owner!

Owner Chris Caillier may be new to Fresno but he is loving it like a native. Caillier relocated to Fresno from Seattle in order to open his first Grocery Outlet and immediately has gotten involved with the community! Of course they had all the local dignitaries out at the Grocery Outlet but his community involvement goes beyond that.  The Grocery Outlet has started with Edison High School. A group from Edison was at the Grand Opening selling hot dogs. Also they are donating money and getting involved with the Jovante Woods Scholarship. There will even be an event near the end of June!

The Downtown Grocery Outlet is also going to be supporting the Muex Home that is right across the street. They will be supporting the Muex Home by working with supplying them with goods for some up coming fundraisers. I am personally a big fan of the Muex Home myself, as I have great childhood memories;). I think that this Grocery Outlet will be a great asset to Fresno and especially downtown.

I also got to tour the store and was quite pleased! In addition to seeing lots of great priced products, including a bunch of gluten free and organic items, I learned 3 very great things about Grocery Outlet! (Ok, I think they are great;)

1) They have a dedicated line of gluten free pasta that is packaged just for them! Which means it is a standing order so they should always have it!

2) Our area Grocery Outlets get all their produce from OK Produce here in Fresno! So when you shop their produce you are shopping local!

3) You know all those great deals on durable goods they always have? The dishes or knives or As Seen on TV stuff? Well, I have always been slow to buy any of those just in case there is something wrong with them. Well, don’t worry about that! Grocery Outlet has a 100% guarantee on all returns. And you can return it to any Grocery Outlet, regardless where you buy it! And there isn’t a time frame either. You can can return anything as long as you have a receipt!

I am still really excited for the Downtown Grocery Outlet! And to celebrate I have another $25 gift card to give away!
