This week’s Monthly Mingle looks at what I would love to review, what animal I would be and both the best and worst of me;). Yes, I know. I need to find a new angle to film at. I need to play around and find a good spot to put my camera.

I think this is adorable! Of course, I love Queen’s Bohemian Rhapsody and for some reason I can relate a bit to this. Enjoy!

Fresno is having budget problems like everyone else. But where does that desire to save money cross a line? Normally you would just say where it crosses over to risking people’s lives or health. Trees wouldn’t cross a line, right? No, trees are crossing the line! I never thought that trees and their issues would infuriate me so!
Here in Fresno many areas have this strip between the sidewalk and the curb. The city has planted trees in them and the city maintains the sidewalk and the trees. In an effort to save money City Hall is considering transferring the responsibility of the tree and sidewalk maintenance to the home owner. I understand that the $800,000 the city spends every year is a lot of money, but really?
They don’t want to transfer ownership, just the responsibility. So now I would have to trim these trees and replace the sidewalk they destroy? The city is already many years behind in fixing sidewalks buckling from roots. Oh, they also say that we wouldn’t be allowed to remove a tree without replacing it with one on the city list. Come on.
The areas of town that have this issues are all older homes to begin with. Most of them are in poorer areas too (which is why the city doesn’t bother to fix the sidewalks). Oh, we would also have to have any sidewalk fixes approved too. I guess I wouldn’t have a problem if first the city caught up and would remove any trees we didn’t want. But no, they want to maintain something that they refer to as the “urban jungle”.
I hope this doesn’t pass the city council but if it does. What are they going to do to enforce it? Won’t that end up costing just as much? To then have the staff to run out and check, then to bill for fines, etc. I personally never want to touch those trees or sidewalk because then I would be libel for them. What could that run my homeowner’s insurance or the lawsuit filled against me when someone falls?
Message to Fresno City Hall: Look somewhere else! I am sure that some of us could come down there and fine a few more frivolous things to cut!

Today we had our last group meeting for MOPS. It is doubly sad. Not only is the year ended but so has NewCov MOPS (for now). There just isn’t a leadership team for next year and that is always a big sign that it may not be the Lord’s timing for a ministry. But we (both moms and kids) have built relationships with each other that will go on beyond any official group. And that is a blessing.
As you can tell I like books, my kids like books and my husband likes books. So why wouldn’t we want to get in on some of the free Kindle downloads out there? Well, since we don’t have a Kindle (and are too cheap to buy one;) we would need a way around that;).
I found myself talking to a few different people lately about what we do for homeschooling here in the NerdFamily house. They often are trying to figure out what the perfect curriculum is or frankly, how to make their kids just love to learn. As I recount the few things we do, I often start to feel like a slacker. We only really do school a few days a week and not that many subjects. We always do math (Singapore) but then only focus on things like Bible, music, and handwriting. I do a little history now and then but nothing real firm. But then I look at my kids and they are pretty bright. They seem to have a decent grasp of logic and a knowledge of quite a few things. Then it always hits me. That the key to my “curriculum” is the fact we don’t do a lot of “school” but we do a lot of reading! Now this isn’t assigned reading that has assignments with it but just kicking back in bed reading. We often ask them what they read and if they learned anything but rarely does it go much beyond that.
NerdDad and I have always been considered repositories of crazy trivia, history, science and math (him more than me;). We both have realized that a lot of what we learned we didn’t learn in school as part of the homework but as part of our free reading. We would wonder about something and get a book. That is how we have chosen to enrich our children. We love books and value knowledge, that has been passed on to our kids.
There is a study out that says that kids who have home libraries do much better in school and that also means that they are more likely to complete college. Kids whose homes have 500 books in China will have 6.6 years of education and in the US they will have 2.4 years more. As the article pointed out, that is difference between an Associates degree and a Bachelors. Remember this wasn’t aimed at homeschoolers but kids in traditional school. That is just based on parents having the books. As homeschoolers, we get to make sure they actually read them. So just imagine how much greater the impact is!
The key to remember in this is that it isn’t knowledge you need but a love and respect of books and knowledge. That is how you get a child to love it too. Too many times I have had people say that my kids love to read only because they were born that way to nerdy parents. Well, over at Why Homeschool they have disproved that it is all about birth. They have created a little reader in Baby Bop, who had no interest in it when he first came to live with them.
Remember, it isn’t about the parents having all the knowledge but of respecting books and learning. So I think that is something we all can do, regardless of our own education.
Are books the center of your curriculum? Do you foster a love for reading just to learn and enjoy?
Here we meet again! I am heading into a crazy week. I think my sanity will only be found in a good meal plan!
So I have had the same digital camera for over 6 years. Needless to say, it was time for an upgrade. So today I went out and got a Canon PowerShot SX120IS. I already notice such a difference! Not only is it so much faster but the pictures already look better! This picture is straight out of the box. I haven’t messed with the setting and there wasn’t any flash!
Stay tuned for more, better pictures!!!
I haven’t participated in Aloha Friday in quite a while! But here goes!
What is your favorite video game? (I had to go with something nerdy;) Just leave your answer in the comments!
