My Shopping List…

NerdDad and I have decided that we need a new desktop computer. We haven’t bought a computer since Windows Vista and that was about 3 years ago.

I have to say that I am a bit overwhelmed at all the choices that out there! I usually love Dell computers but I want to make sure that I am getting the most for my money but… I don’t want to settle for something that will be buggy later. If we aren’t shopping with Dell we usually shop reconditioned at CompUSA but we tend to have little issues with those later. This will be a computer we will keep for a while because it will probably become a media computer in a few years or a kid computer;).

So what are we looking for?

  1. A Windows machine (No, I am not buying an Apple. Period)
  2. Under $700
  3. Probably at least an i3 but probably more
  4. We want to run 2 screens!
  5. I want to Skype and stream video for a possible Web show.
  6. Want to play video games
  7. Blogging, of course but that is such a small resource demand
  8. Running a Virtual Machine for NerdDad’s projects
  9. Run VNC well (again, not a huge demand)
  10. Want it to run fairly quietly & cool (previous issues)
That isn’t really all that much. The challenge is knowing what is over kill versus a little room to grow. How much Ram should I get? How many cores? A little SSD? What level of a graphics card?
Ugh! So much research to do! Anyone have any wisdom?

What the Blurg?

1/2 a billion dollars. 1/2 a billion dollars down the toilet. Why? Because the administration thinks the way to make an industry grow is by throwing money at it willy nilly. The Bush administration had already passed on backing Solyndra but Obama was sure he knew better. I mean when George Stephanopoulos says that people warned him, you know there had red flags a waving.

I don’t have a problem with this due to the fact it is green energy but do to faulty business theory. Government should get out of the way of business but that isn’t the same thing as throwing money at it. I would love to see us as an active participant in the green energy race but lets not worry about shipping over seas until we can take care of the domestic demand.

If we can build a better product then we should do it. But inflating a company’s worth with false cash flow does not actually make it successful. That is really only done by actually producing a product or service that people want to buy. And Venture Capitalists are always looking for that to invest in.
Venture Capitalist is not a role the United States government should be taking on.

Write About Us, Mommy!

This morning I was sitting with my 4 year old while my older 3 were in dance class. See the older 3 take Irish Dance every Monday morning. I take a little job for me, this week sorting out expired coupons. The baby (Yes, I understand she is 4 but she is still my baby;) takes her Pocket V-Smile, a book and a snack. It is a great opportunity to some time all alone with her every week.

So this week she and I were talking about what we were going to do when we got home. She wanted to play on the computer while the older 3 did homework. I said I was going to work on my computer and blogs. I asked her what I should write about today. She replied, “Us. Write about us, mommy!”. So I asked her is she meant her and her siblings and nope. She meant her and I.

She wanted me to write about postcards. When I asked who we should make postcards for she kind of surprised me. She wanted me to tell everyone that Mommies should make and give postcards to their kids. When I asked why she said, “Because you love me, silly mommy.”

So all of you mommies out there. Make a card or note and give it to your kids! Just because you love them!!!

PS. Yes, it won’t be long before NerdPud has a blog all her own;).

Geeky Links 10/1

How in the world is it October already? This year (and life) seems to be flying by! Oh well, let us jump into some awesome geeky links!

I remember asking about this when I was in elementary school and got some sort of nonsense answer;).

Time has an interesting piece that shows that there may firm proof contradicting Einstein with a neutrino that may travel faster than the speed of light.

There is a Fact Sheet on the cool Lego Explorer and it compares it to the Ford Explorer;).

GeekyTom has Monty Python in Lego over on Flickr!!

Food Links 10/1

Over at the Huffington Post a physicist thinks he may have cracked the barbecue secret!

The Denver Post has a really interesting article about Haute Cuisine Fueling the Foodie Culture, even for those of us who don’t eat all that fancy but are foodies.

CJOnline has a piece that talks about the Listeria outbreak in Colorado.

At Science Daily there was a really interesting piece about some new flavors of Peruvian cacao that the USDA is identifying. There is a mention that those flavors might marketed in the future like wine.

Last but not least, Food Network is running a little butter or sour cream poll going on. Which do you like on your baked potato?

Last Chance Coupons

It is the last day of the month, which means that some really great coupons may be going away tonight! So if you haven’t printed these yet, hurry!!!
