Parody Joy

Ok, we can’t deny that Lady Gaga is super catchy and the kids would love it. But I don’t love the lyrics. So when I was looking at Hanukkah videos I saw numerous Jewish Lady Gaga parodies and we here at the NerdFamily have been watching a ton of them. And we love them!!! Who knew Hebrew and Yiddish would lend itself so well;).

These parodies have led to both interesting and hilarious results. Interesting because it has given me plenty of things to explain to the kiddos. Not only what is referenced in the videos on that face of it but why we keep and agree with some of those things and not others. The hilarity comes when you see your 7 and 3 year old girls singing about not seeing someone because they are engaged;). I rolled!

Time and Influence

So I am reading the new biography of Deitrich Bonhoeffer, Bonhoeffer: Pastor, Martyr, Prophet, Spy, and they were talking about the influence the children’s 2 Christian nannies had. They were talking about the importance of the nannies’ faith to Bonhoeffer’s mom and how they helped to form the children’s faith.

I started thinking about how important it is to really contemplate who you bring in to influence your kids for 8 hours a day (like sitters or nannies) or even how much we ponder whose homes we will allow our children to visit.  Of course that led me to thinking about school. We examine and re-examine who we bring into our homes but many are completely  complacent to allow the school to chose who will be influencing their kids in the schools. Now I have heard from many people how they have good, Christian teachers this year but not last, or may be next year it may not be good.

Would you employ a nanny agency that would maybe let you choose your first nanny but every so often was going to change nannies and you wouldn’t get a say? Of course not! You want control over someone who will be such an integral part of you child’s life. Why don’t people have the same outrage about the schools being run that way?

Is it because the government has told you that you don’t have the right to? And what do you think about that?

Kicking Off 2011’s Meal Plans

Can you believe that it is already 2011? I am going to try to focus on emptying my freezer and pantry this month. There isn’t a lot there but this week I think I am not going to really have to buy anything much more than eggs and milk!

Monday: Spicey Chicken and Potatoes, Broccoli
Tuesday: Quesadillas
Wednesday: Corned Beef, Potatoes, Buttery Rolls, Broccoli
Thursday: Beans and rice
Friday: Quesadillas

Consistency or Pompascity?

I can’t figure out it this is carrying a belief to a logical conclusion or if this is just the making of pompous jerks! We know that there were many people who said that we shouldn’t have gotten the tax cuts (which weren’t actually tax cuts but a continuing of the status quo) because the economy and Federal government need all of our pennies.

So in response to that some professors from Yale and Cornell have built a website called Give it Back for Jobs. They will calculate your tax cut and then you can choose a group to donate it to. I don’t know if they are just being consistent or just a bunch of pompous jerks.

My first question is: Did they do it? We don’t see anywhere how much their tax cut is or where they donated.
My second question: What are they claiming as “operating expenses”, ie going in their pockets? (yes, I am always the cynic)

Of course I disagree with their basic premise. I don’t believe that taxes will fix the economy but that is a separate issue. If this is really on the up and up, I am happy to see people following through on their own claims. If they think I shouldn’t have my tax cuts, I welcome them to go first and give theirs back;).

Pedialyte and Stomach Bugs

Stomach bugs are a nasty thing. What makes them nastier is when they hit big families! Usually it isn’t just one person who gets it and everyone else feels fine. That is why I try to keep a stock of supplies just in case it wreaks havoc upon us!

I remember back 6 ½ years ago. I had a 2 year old and a not quite 3 month old. My dear, sweet husband had to go to a class that work had paid for down in Los Angeles for 4 days. 24 hours before my loving husband left I got a stomach bug that was so bad I could barely walk. When he left I was still at the tablespoon full of water at a time because 2 would make me throw up;). So as life would have it, by the time I was barely able to have a quarter cup of water, the 2 year old had his first bout of the stomach flu! Poor NerdDad missed it;). So that meant that we were getting by on water and soda crackers for days until I felt I could venture to the store upright with both kids. Needless to say that with the sudden onset of the stomach flu (it was only September) I was not prepared at all! And it being my first experience with my own little one, I wasn’t prepared for what he would need.

I vowed it would never happen again! Now I always make sure to keep Pedialyte, soda crackers, and broth on hand. I do not skimp on the brand when it comes to Pedialyte, it is just too important. When we first started buying it I would get the big bottles because it is cheaper by the ounce but we never finished it. My kids were also kind of thrown off by the fruit punch because they don’t normally drink it. So I was stoked to find the tetra pack in the apple juice flavor! It is the perfect serving size and cools down quickly at the first sign of stomach issues!

So are you stocked up in case of stomach bugs? Here are some essentials for a well-stocked medicine chest from Pedialyte!

New Years Geek Resolutions

@Cebsilver asked this morning over on Twitter if anyone had any geeky New Years Resolutions. Well, as a matter of fact I do;). This is the year I finally bask in my geek! I have a huge list of geek things I want to do both for geek fun and to be productive.

So starting with the productive geek (but not the blog stuff;). I want to take some old (very old) computers and piece together a NAS system (Network Attached Storage). NerdDad desires something in the 5 hard drive range but we will see the capacity for the machines. I want to take a desktop that we are currently running our tv off of and make it a true media system. I need to put ram, tuners, a dvr, speakers, etc. I also want to build out a new desktop system for myself and NerdDad. Possibly with a dual screen setup.

On the fun geek side! I want to try and make it to the GirlGeekCon up in Seattle this year. I want to make a point of gaming weekly!!! It doesn’t have to be anything serious, just regularly scheduled! I am going to fit in time for both the wii and Steam games. I am also going to keep up on my tech news through reading and podcasts. I am just going to have to make an appointment with myself.

I also have a list of movies to watch. Things like Goonies, Blade Runner and more!

So there are my geek resolutions. I will have more normal resolutions but that is a separate post;).
