Fresno Area You Pick Farms

We all know that Fresno is the home to great produce but it has always seemed like all that produce is on a truck to a grocery store. I am sick of hearing from friends around the state and the nation how much fun they have had at the You-pick farms in their area while it seemed to not be an option for me!!! So I did a little research and found out that we have a few great You-Pick opportunities in the Fresno area! Not all of them are in Fresno proper but that shouldn’t be all that surprising;).

You Pick Farms

We all know that Fresno is the home to great produce but it has always seemed like all that produce is on a truck to a grocery store. I am sick of hearing from friends around the state and the nation how much fun they have had at the You-pick farms in their area while it seemed to not be an option for me!!! So I did a little research and found out that we have a few great You-Pick opportunities in the Fresno area! Not all of them are in Fresno proper but that shouldn’t be all that surprising;).

Rancho Notso Grande: They are open Tue-Sat 7am-7pm Right now they have blueberries & blackberries available. They charge $6.50/pound for what ever you get out the gate. There is no charge for anything you devour while you are picking. That is my kind of picking;). My great grandmother used to say the only picking that counts is what made it to the kitchen, all the rest is the fun. They grow 13 different type of berries. Nectarines will be ready in a couple of weeks and more fruits after that! Check their facebook page for updates and what is ripe!

J&K Farley Farms They charge 65 cents a pound! They open when fruit is ripe close when they are out of it! They expect to open back up in a couple of weeks for Peaches and mid-July a lot of fruit come in. Once mid-July hits they are open pretty much the rest of the season. They also have animals to pet, a picnic area to eat in and if you call ahead, a free tour. Their website doesn’t tell you when they open up you need to check their facebook page or get on their email list.

Dinuba blueberry Farm (Cross Streets Mt. View/rd 68, Dinuba , CA 93618. Phone:559-743-5943) Call for an appointment but most weekends they will be having a you pick day! They don’t have a website or a facebook page.

Genesis Organic Farms open in July for you pick pluots ($1/pound) and heirloom tomatoes($2/pound). They will post hours as we get closer.

Fresno State Organic Farm Market does a you pick program also. There wasn’t a lot of firm information other than it is usually about every other weekend (the 23rd being a pick weekend) and I was told that prices were “pretty cheap”. You need to call them for details.

Tips for Travel, Health & Comfort

It is blog conference season and for me that means lots of travel. Which also often means illness and discomfort! But I don’t have to be miserable and neither do you! The ever fabulous Tracy from Tide Massage, who is my massage therapist, has some great tips for healthy, comfortable and stress free for travel this summer or anytime!

(This was originally posted Tide Massage’s blog in 2010)

There are loads of good things about the holidays, unfortunately sometimes those good things are a long way away and our holiday fun is overshadowed by the pains of holiday travel. I have half of my holiday travel done already, I just got back from a combined late turkey day/early Christmas with my far away family. Feeling a little worse for the wear upon my return got me thinking about what I did wrong and what I could have done better. So here we go, a Christmas gift to you, learn from my fail.

No Fail Rule #1 Get plenty of rest before you travel.
It’s tempting to stay up late the night before you leave, but contrary to what you think, you will not sleep on the plane…so get your 8 hrs in the night before! Make a list of what you need to pack in the days prior to travel, so you won’t lay awake wondering what you have forgotten.

No Fail Rule #2 Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate!
Just drinking bottled water on the plane isn’t quite enough to really keep hydrated. Starting out well hydrated is your first step…but bottled water may not be the best choice. I typically drink tap water (shocking I know!) but when I have ignored my hydration levels for a bit and need a boost I will pick up a gallon of distilled water. The more minerals there are in water, the less hydrating it is, for this reason I choose distilled water, which contains no minerals or impurities. Spring water and filtered water contain many minerals. Don’t ignore the water in your food, watermelon, celery, cucumbers, and many other fresh fruits and veggies contain plenty of water to help keep you hydrated. Stay away from salty or fatty foods, and refined sugar. Avoid drinking alcohol on the plane, not only will it dehydrate you , but the altitude makes you feel the effects of the alcohol quicker and your tolerance will be lower than normal.

No Fail Rule #3 Sit up and Get up!
On a plane, train or stuck in a car, there are some simple stretches and seated exercises you can do to arrive feeling good. Move any parts you can and move them frequently. Roll your shoulders up to your ears and back, then change direction. Roll your head in circles and tuck your chin down to your chest, stretch your arms over your head, flex your toes and roll your ankles in circles, reverse directions. If you are traveling by plane or train get up and walk, do laps around the plane if you can. If you are in a car, make the most of your pit stops. If your travel partner will let you eat in the car, pack your food or take your food to go so that your pit stop time can be spent on your feet and moving around instead of sitting in a greasy spoon. Stretch, wiggle, bounce, do a little parking lot yoga, go for a quick walk or run, whatever gets your blood moving and warms up your muscles. Pay attention to your posture, avoid sitting slumped down or with your shoulders rolled forward.

No Fail Rule #4 Let it go…
Stress can often come from within. When we dwell on negatives, worry about things that are out of our control, and hold ourselves to unrealistic standards we create stress for ourselves. Self created stress has very real physical repercussions, our body releases chemicals and hormones that make our bodies work harder and deplete our immune system. Stressing about delays and missed connections doesn’t change the outcome, only how miserable you are during the delay. Go with the flow and stay clam. Use the time waiting in airports of train stations to move around, do something that refreshes you, take some deep breaths, meditate if you are inclined or pass time by chatting with fellow travelers. If something goes wrong, let it go, describe it as a delay and don’t drag out the details.

No Fail Rule # 6 Reward Yourself!
Schedule a massage, pedicure, facial, Yoga class or visit to the Chiropractor on each end of your travels. Not only will this give you something to look forward to, but it will help you feel renewed and refreshed and bring you back to your old self!

I hope these tips help make your travels a little easier all the year through, and that everyone has a great holiday season, near or far!

House M.D.: Critical Cases

One of the most addicting aspects of Facebook has to be the games. I mean, I am not the only one right?  I fall into the copious amounts of free, fun games that are all over Facebook. But with so many games you really only hear about the ones your friends play and there are so many more to choose from. The developers of these Facebook games have gone beyond developers that only develop for Facebook and apps. Now real game companies like Ubisoft are designing these Facebook games!

One such game is House M.D.: Critical Cases! This is based on the ever popular show House M.D., which I have loved for years! You come in as an intern and become part of House’s team. That means you will get all the dirty work! Be it searching through garbage, wheeling patients to tests or running a code blue! There are speed tests and logic games as tasks to help get information to help heal your patient. You earn money to pay for the treatments and gain experience to climb the ranks.

It is one of those great games that you can play for just a little bit or play for quite a while. I must admit, it is a bit addicting… The graphics are cute but detailed and the game play is very smooth. Everything you need to know is on one screen and it even has a map set up on screen that you maneuver through. All and all it is a neat little game. I haven’t played for hours yet but it does seem to be missing the most annoying part of many Facebook games, you don’t need to get or give gifts to your friends in order to play!!!

So what are you doing here still reading? Go, play House M.D.: Critical Cases and relax!!!

My Love, Hate and Fascination with Water

A fountain at the Opry hotel at Blissdom 2012

I have always been afraid of water. I think it is the horror stories I heard as a kid (granddad had a heart attack and died in a reservoir), the fact I almost drowned at 5 and I am a control freak.

But I love the water. I like to be near it, I tend take pictures of it every time I can and I like to vacation by it.

I am fascinated by water. I think it is where my nerdiness may have begun because I am fascinated by it. Even as a small child I wanted to understand how and why works the way it does. And that is all science! The more I understand the more I realize how powerful it is. And the more I understand the science behind water the more I understand how much more I want to learn!

Friday Fun: Hugh Jackman Dancing

If you don’t know that I find Hugh Jackman a little charming you don’t know me at all;). Ok, I don’t care if it is a Lipton tea commercial, its fun;). Apparently, Hugh Jackman has done a whole series of these dancing Lipton commercials all over the world. Have I just not seen them because I Tivo everything or watch it on Hulu? Anyway, it is cute;).
