Minecraft Biomes: 1 The Mushroom Island

Mushroom island

This is one of the coolest biomes and one of the most unique. This is found in the middle of the ocean that’s why it’s called an island. You don’t want to spawn at the start here because there is no trees or seeds. But there are giant mushrooms. If you want to learn more about Mushrooms check out last week’s post.

There is a neat block that is found in the mushroom island and in the dark forest. It’s called the mycelium block and it is the only thing that you can plant a mushroom on in broad daylight otherwise you need to have stuff on top. The Mushroom island is a great place to come upon later in the game as a secondary base. I like it the most because it is the most unique with lots of new things. The terrain is flat with steep hills.

There is a mob that is specific to the mushroom island and that is the mooshroom. This is a cow that is red and white and with mushrooms on it’s back. You can shear a mooshroom turning it in o a regular cow or milk it with a bowl and you will get mushroom stew. Also a mooshroom will act like a regular cow with milk and if killed beef and leather though they will also drop a couple red mushrooms. This is the only mob that will spawn on the mushroom island including hostile mobs so it is pretty safe.

This is a great biome and you should definitely check it out. Let me know any biomes you want to be included in this series.

Botany of Minecraft: Part 2: Fungus among us

Botany_of_Minecraft

This week I am going to talk about mushrooms. There are only 2 kinds of mushrooms and they aren’t different other than the color and the name.

The most often found one is the brown one with a white stem known as the brown mushroom. The Nerdster said these are his favorite because he can make fermented spider eyes and then he can poison people.  But my favorite is the red with white polka dots and a white stem, called the red mushroom. I didn’t say they had snappy names.

There are only 3 different ways to use a mushroom but they are pretty helpful. The most found is the mushroom stew which is both kinds of mushrooms and a wooden bowl which is made the same way as a bucket (iron in the bottom middle and in the middle left and right) with planks instead of iron. Or you can make a more complex version with a carrot, a rabbit, and any mushroom and a bowl. The only other one is the fermented spider eye which is used in making hurtful potions which is a spider eye, a brown mushroom and sugar.

There are a couple of different places that you can find mushrooms. They are abundantly in the Nether everywhere. Also you can find them in caves or forests. But the most interesting place is the Mushroom Island which I will talk about in a future post.

There is a variant of the mushroom that is seriously wacky so I have to talk about it. There are giant mushrooms that are found in the dark forests and the mushroom island. The brown giant mushroom looks like a big umbrella and the red one is like a little house raised off the ground. When you dig out a block of a giant mushroom you get about 2 mushrooms so you could get lots from 1. To make a giant mushroom you just need to hit a mushroom with a 7×7 square around it that is planted with bone meal till it poofs into a giant mushroom.

I hope you like learning about mushrooms. Tell me what you want to learn about most in Minecraft in the comments.

The Botany Of Minecraft: Part 1 :The Tree

Botany of Minecraft: Part 1

I have been studying Botany for science class so I thought that I should make a series on  botany in Minecraft. Botany is all about Plants and there are lots of different kinds of plants in Minecraft but today I am going to talk trees, leaves, and wood this time. A neat trick is to knock down leaves with shears and a leaf block will drop as an Item. That will hurt the shears as well so don’t think you can do it forever. This trick also works for grass, ferns, and grass blocks which can be placed as a dirt block with grass already on it. Here is a list of all the different trees and what they look like but don’t worry, I won’t make you take notes.

Birch

This is one of my favorite in terms of look. The birch tree has a white with black spotted bark and a cream inside and gray green leaves. The door is really neat it is white with a cream window.

Oak

This are the most common trees. There is a plain brown bark with a light brown inner with green leaves. This is the base of the different trees on Minecraft. This door is just brown with a little picture window.

Spruce

This wood is very dark and is often found in snow. It has a brown almost black bark and a dark brown inside with dark  leaves. This door is awesome for jail cell because it looks like it has iron bars on it.

Jungle

This is found you guessed it in a jungle. Everything is almost the same as oak but the plank is tinged pink. The door has a long key shaped hole in it. These trees often grow with 4 trunks instead of 1.

 Acacia

This is the most colorful tree because it has a gray bark with an orange plank and slightly dark green leaves. This door looks like a screen door.

Dark Oak

This is like a mash of other trees. The log is the same as spruce or a little darker and the leaves are the same as Acacia. The planks are very good for details as they are super dark. The door is the best for mansions because it looks like a fancy candy bar.

I hope you liked learning all about trees. Let  me know what your favorite tree is. Next week I will be talking about Flowers.

Ringing in The New Update

The New Update

There is a new update that is going to come out in about a month or so. It is so cool. So to celebrate the new Year I thought I’d  talk about the new Update. They have added a lot of new things but before I tell you what they are, I will tell you how I know so much and how you can try it too.

The NerdDad taught us nerdlings how to get to the beta testers. On the Minecraft window that pops up before you get to real Minecraft. Click on the edit profile button. Click  on “allow beta testers”.  Save profile and play. Don’t play on a world unless you don’t care if it is gone.

I suggest you try it on creative first, that is really helpful. I found out that there is a bunch of new cheats but I am not going to talk about them. Also I am not going to say every statistic but if you want all of those go to the Minecraft Wiki. The biggest area that was altered was the End but the Nether wasn’t altered at all.

Mostly I have only explored the End’s new items but they are impressing me a ton. Nothing is changed until after you kill the Ender Dragon. Then there are these little floating portals that if you go through will take you to the end islands. they have Chorus plants that you can knock down and eat the fruit and the fruit will teleport you to a block near you. Then there are end cities But I think that I will give you something to discover your self with that.

The PE edition players will like that there will be Beetroots and Beetroot soup now in regular Minecraft. The other Big thing is that there is now a shield that you can use to block instead of a sword but I don’t understand it super well yet.

Let me know your favorite new part.

Ways to Play Minecraft

minecraft_find_your_type

Today I am going to tell you all about the different modes of Minecraft. You are probably familiar with the survival mode which is where you start but did you know there were 4 modes you could play? All of them use the same maps and have the same basic design and were built of the basic survival.

Creative: This is one of my favorites but the NerdDad says he doesn’t see the point of it. In Creative you have access to any block on minecraft and you can fly! Creative is basically a big sand box that you can build anything, and do anything you can think of. I love that in creative you have access to every block even ones you can’t craft and can’t hold in any other mode. Also in Creative if you hit a block it is vaporized so you can’t get the block but you don’t have to dig it out either. If you place a block in Creative the block is still in your hand and the block is place so you never run out of supplies.

Survival: This is NerdDad’s favorite mode. He says he likes it because there is are reason to do and that He doesn’t want to do an art project he wants to play. This is regular you can die you have to dig things out all the basics.

Adventure:  This is made for specific maps you cannot destroy any blocks unless you have the right tool so a shovel for dirt that sort of thing. I haven’t done any thing with this so you guys should tell me all about it in the comments.

Hardcore: This is almost the same as survival except there no cheats. Also if you die your world is gone. You really die. I don’t play on this much because I am not the best player so I like to be able to die

Make sure to let me know your favorite modes and why in the comments.

The Villages Of Minecraft

minecraft_talk_of_the_town

This post is going  to tell you all about the Villages that are formed in Minecraft. The most found structure is the village and that is mainly what I will be focusing on that but there are much more. A Village is the best way to get both carrots and potatoes and there is also wheat, all of which are planted. Villagers are what are found living in a village. You can trade with them by clicking on them and giving them what they want. Also they are the ones who tend to the crops there. There are also torches on blocks of wool that you can get if you need torches or a bed. Be careful at night a village is a place that attracts zombies at night and the can turn villagers into zombies too. There are also  houses that you can live in if you want made out of wood, logs cobblestone and glass windows. There are a couple of specialized buildings found in the village.

  • Church. These are 3 stories and have ladder to connect them. This is mostly made out of cobblestone with a few torches. This is best used for  house, materials, or a lookout post.
  • Blacksmith.  These are often the most helpful buildings. They have lava and iron bars. And there is a room in the back that has a chest with special stuff. This is made out of more of the stuff as the house
  • Library. The only thing notable about this is that there are books in it.

The village is not the only structure. There are dungeons and mineshafts that I will tell you about later, or you can tell me what else there is to the structures of Minecraft.

Do You Know Where Your Minecraft Food is Coming from?

Minecraft_Farming

Food is very important. If you don’t have it you will eventually die (unless you are on peaceful a game mode setting where no monsters spawn and you don’t get hungry). Hungry itself won’t kill you but if you don’t have full food you won’t regain full health and you will be hurt until you have half hearts. The way your food levels are shown is that little bar that looks like pork chops. To be healed only like 2 of them can be gone. There are 2 major types of food But I am only going to talk about grown food:

Grown: These are all found in the ground like:

  • Wheat: I know that I have talked about this before but it is very important. It is planted any place that is hoed and is less then 4 blocks (diagonally) from a water source, I make a 9 by 9 square and take out the middle block and fill it with water. Wheat has to be planted on dirt only.
  • Carrot: These are planted and grown in the same way as wheat but are able to be eaten raw. These are only found in villages and some times when we kill a zombie.
  • Potatoes: These are almost the same as carrots but the are not as good for eating raw giving only half a food piece so you should bake them instead.
  • Pumpkins: These are grown in a spot next to water on dirt and will make a vine that will make a pumpkin on the block next to it.The only way to eat these is by making a pie with just a sugar a pumpkin and an egg.
  • Melons: these are grown the same way but you can eat slices of this by putting a melon in a crafting table. You can also make potions with melons.

this is just a few of the great foods that you can eat. tell me your fave.

The Magical World of Minecraft: Part 2 Brewing

Minecraft_Potion_Brewing

This weeks is all about Potions. These are very hard to get ether by killing a witch (see part 1) or by making your own. I just started working with potions with the rest of the Nerdlings on a server we have. Potions are later in the game than enchanting needing obsidian to make a portal. Thats right we are talking about the nether. To Brew potions you need to have a brewing stand made with a blaze rod. A Blaze is a monster on minecraft that only spawns in the nether fortress. A Nether fortress is a huge structure made of nether brick that spawns wither skeletons and Blazes. To learn more about Blazes check out my Nether post. To make a brewing stand you need a Blaze rod that sometimes is dropped by a Blaze. To make a brewing stand put cobblestone across the bottom of the crafting table then a blaze rod in the middle middle. To brew potions you need to get nether wart to make a awkward potion which is like a base potion that you need to use when brewing. Next you need to figure out a potion to make. I am not going to tell you all the types of potions but if you want to learn all of them go to the minecraft wiki brewing page http://minecraft.gamepedia.com/Brewing . There are a couple of ingredients that will boost the potions effect

  • Redstone: This boost the amount of time that a potion runs like if you had a speed potion for 2 mins then brew a redstone in to it then it would be 4 mins.
  • Glowstone: This strengthens the effect of the potion, if you have a speed potion that boosts it 20% then you brew a glowstone dust then it would be 40%
  • Fermented Spider Eye: This reverses the potions effect so if you had a speed potion it would turn into a slowness potion. This is made with a spider eye and a sugar in the crafting table.

I hope you have a good understanding of the world of Potions and Brewing.           Nerdpie
